Champions Trophy final: India win toss, elect to field first

Pakistan came into the ICC Champions Trophy as the lowest-ranked ODI team. But they turned it around in style as they topped South Africa (19 runs via D/L method), and Sri Lanka (three wickets) to enter the semi-finals where they got the better of hosts England by eight wickets.

Fakhar Zaman capitalised on a lucky escape to strike a superb 114 and lift Pakistan to a commanding total of 338 for four in the Champions Trophy final against arch-rivals India at The Oval on Sunday.

Even Golden Bat victor Shikhar Dhawan couldn't resist Amir's persistent accuracy, edging through outside off-stump, and when teenage spinner Shadab Khan successfully convinced Sarfraz Ahmed to review a "not out" lbw decision against Yuvraj Singh India's hopes were fading fast at 54-4.

Fakhar capitalised on a huge piece of fortune early in proceedings - he was caught from a Jasprit Bumrah no-ball when on three - but rode his luck to pummel the Indian attack to all parts. Ashwin was brought in to hunt for wickets but he was played out and struck for a six in his first over.

Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali made the ideal start for Pakistan even with Zaman "losing" his wicket only for it to be a no-ball and India missing out on a run-out all before the opener reached 10. Agallant effort from Hardik Pandya created some interest in the faltering Indian chase but one would never know if he could have taken India home when more than 180 runs were needed in about 23 overs with only four wickets in hand. He however carried on after his captain's dismissal to nudge towards his first ODI hundred. Fakhar was out to a nice catch on the run by Jadeja behind square.

Once last hope Hardik Pandya (76) was run out, the writing was on the wall as India were bundled out for just 158 with nearly 20 overs remaining.

Kohli's dismissal for five following a golden run in the tournament prompted gloom among the India supporters.

The left-arm paceman dismissed Rohit Sharma, skipper Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Azhar Ali (59), Mohammed Hafeez (57) and Babar Azam (46) also played solid to prop up the Pakistan innings.

Kohli, the world's top-ranked one-day batsman, had been dropped off the previous delivery in the slips and the India fans looked shell-shocked as he trudged off.

Any thought of the unlikeliest of victories was snuffed out when Pandya was run out by the length of the pitch after a mix-up with Jadeja.

India captain Virat Kohli, who was one of three batsmen dismissed in a devastating opening spell from Mohammad Amir, accepted his side had been a distant second best. In his 106-ball innings, Zaman hit 12 boundaries and three sixes. Dhoni's catch was taken by Imad in Hasan Ali's over.

"Mohammad Amir is a big-match player", said Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur.
