Champions Trophy Final: Photos from Pakistan's triumph over India

Sarfraz Ahmed

Amir took out all three of India's premier batsmen, bowled a maiden for figures of 6-2-16-3, then watched as his teammates mopped up. The Green Shirts had entered as the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, with nobody predicting they would go on to lift the trophy.

Pakistan batsman Fakhar Zaman celebrates after scoring a century during the ICC Champions Trophy final between Pakistan and India.

The green shirts' total was bolstered by a solid 128-run opening stand between Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali which set the mood for the first inning. He celebrated with an extravagant twirl of his bat and kissed the turf as the Pakistan supporters sensed an unlikely win.

338 Pakistan's total, their highest in any tournament final, and their second-highest in an ODI against India. The fourth, fifth and sixth overs were milked for 29 runs, after the first three had produced only eight.

Their hopes now rested largely on the shoulders of Shikhar Dhawan who had been in fine form in the tournament but he made only 21 before nicking the inspired Amir to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.

Yuvraj Singh was lbw to leg-spinner Shadab and former captain MS Dhoni, the hero of many an India rescue mission, holed out in the deep. A gallant effort from Hardik Pandya created interest in the faltering Indian chase but one would never know if he could have taken India home when more than 180 were needed in about 23 overs with only four wickets in hand. Pandya (76 off 43 balls) was dealing in boundaries at that point, having already hammered six sixes and four fours. Jadeja nicked Junaid Khan to slip for 15 shortly afterwards.

Kohli downplayed India's comfortable win over Pakistan in the group stage and believes the team that excel in all the three departments on that day will come out on top.

Disappointed with the coin not turning in his favour, Pakistan skipper Sarfraz said, "We wanted to bowl first". But for a guy like Zaman, it becomes really hard to stop players like him, because I think 80 per cent of his shots were high- risk and they were all coming off.

India has defeated Pakistan twice in the finals of the global tournaments. "They made us make those mistakes because of the way they were bowling and the way they applied the pressure in the field, as well, and we have no hesitations or shame in admitting that we could not play our best game today".

India won the toss and chose to put Pakistan into bat - a decision that turned out to be a awful call. The Pakistan openers capitalized on the lucky break by attacking Bumrah but Bhuvaneshwar Kumar held his own at the other end.
