Cincinnati doctors share Otto Warmbier's condition

He has not spoken since his return to his family hometown in Ohio.

The other Americans held by Pyongyang are Kim Sang Duk and Kim Hak-song, academics who worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and businessman named Kim Dong Chul.

Doctors will provide further details about Warmbier's condition on Thursday afternoon.

A White House spokeswoman says Warmbier's release "was a big priority" for President Donald Trump. They started in Norway, playing the role of neutral third party, and moved to NY, where North Korean diplomats are accredited at the United Nations.

Otto Warmbier was in coma when he was released Tuesday, and he was taken to the neuroscience intensive care unit at UCMC in Ohio.

He was given a 15-year prison sentence for attempting to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel.

What happened next, and how Warmbier ended up in a coma, is still unclear.

Some media reports said the North Koreans suggested Otto Warmbier had come down with a case of botulism and fell into a coma after being given a sleeping pill - an account questioned by a number of officials. But we're tremendously proud of him.

As for whether Warmbier will be able to recover, doctors at UC Health say information regarding his prognosis and prospects for improvement will remain confidential at request of family.

Tensions between the United States and North Korea have been heightened by dozens of North Korean missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since the beginning of past year.

Trump called the family last night, Fred Warmbier said.

In recent months, Warmbier said, he and his wife, Cindy, had made a decision to take a more public stance in calling for their son's release, after months of following advice that they should try not to antagonize or offend leaders in North Korea. Shortly after the Swedish visits, the North reached out to the US with an urgent request to meet in person.

"He doesn't deserve this", Fred Warmbier told The Cincinnati Enquirer in an interview last month.

Denise Koesterman, right, and Alison Lebrun, left, tie blue-and-white awareness ribbons along Springfield Pike near the family home of Otto Warmbier, June 13, 2017.

It's unclear if Yun knew as he set off for North Korea that he'd be allowed to bring Warmbier home.

"I know you have many questions about what transpired, so do we".

Richardson, a Democrat, credited the State Department with securing Warmbier's return without any preconditions but said a forceful response from the USA government would be required "if it's determined that there was a cover-up and Otto's condition was not disclosed and he didn't get proper treatment".

On Thursday, North Korea said that it had released Mr Warmbier "on humanitarian grounds".

Warmbier's state of "unresponsive wakefulness" most likely means that he can open his eyes and has functioning reflexes, but is unresponsive to commands and other tests of consciousness. He hasn't spoken to the media since returning and US officials have referred most questions to Warmbier's family.

Mr Tillerson said on Tuesday that the State Department continues "to have discussions" with North Korea about the release of the other imprisoned Americans. The U.S. wouldn't publicly describe their condition.

His parents plan a Thursday morning news conference.
