Conservative Leader: Special Counsel Mueller To Leave?

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he will "defend the integrity" of the special counsel's investigation into Russian interference in the USA elections.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy said in an interview with Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour".

The Times of course could not withstand the desire to make a comparison to Watergate, earnestly noting that if Trump did fire Mueller, it would lead to a "series of events" recalling Watergate's "Saturday Night Massacre".

Technically, yes - but it's complicated, and experts say the possibility is far-fetched.

Rosenstein is charged with Mueller's fate because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from all matters having to do with the Trump-Russia investigation.

"As long as I'm in this position, he's not going to be fired without cause", he added.

It's unclear whether the president could override those rules and order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

In a Tuesday hearing on the Justice Department budget for the 2018 fiscal year, Sen. "Come on, we dare you".

President Donald Trump interviewed Robert Mueller as a potential replacement for fired FBI Director James Comey the day before the former FBI director was named special counsel, a White House official said Tuesday.

"Either of those actions was unthinkable to us back in 1999, for we understood that President Richard Nixon's attempt in this regard ultimately led to his downfall", Katyal wrote. Ruddy's remarks on Monday came after attorney Jay Sekulow's appearance Sunday on ABC News' This Week With George Stephanopoulos.

In a February meeting, Comey said, Trump told Sessions and other administration officials to leave the room before asking him to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

Weeks ago, Gingrich had heaped praise on Mueller, hailing him as a "superb choice" for special counsel whose reputation was "impeccable for honesty and integrity".

She said Mr Trump was not able to watch much of Mr Sessions' testimony, but he thought Mr Sessions "did a very good job" and was especially "strong" on denying any collusion between Mr Trump's campaign and Russian Federation. But the Department of Justice told the Post that ethics officials had reviewed the cases and determined it was still appropriate for Mueller to head the investigation.

Trump could order Mueller's dismissal.

"These are people who are going to be after Trump", Gingrich said, adding that Mueller "apparently couldn't find a single pro-Trump attorney to hire, and I just think that's a rigged game, and I think that it's a mistake to pretend this is going to be some neutral investigation".

Gingrich said that he wrote his new book, Understanding Trump, because "Trump represents a different world" than the "world of Washington". "It's kind of like the sorcerers apprentice". Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., suggesting that the attorney general was "cowering" in the face of tough questioning. But there are other options for independent investigations.

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

Rosenstein repeatedly conveyed his support for Mueller's role at a Senate hearing, held the morning after a close friend of President Donald Trump was quoted in a television interview as saying he was considering dismissing Mueller.
