Coroner examining death of United States student released by North Korea

The meeting came days after American college student Otto Warmbier died after being returned from North Korea in a coma.

He declined to estimate how long it would take for the coroner's office to complete its inquiry.

But plans changed after the coroner's office decided at the family's urging not to conduct an autopsy, instead limiting its examination to an external analysis of Warmbier's remains and review of his records, Zornes said.

Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor after being convicted of attempting to steal a propaganda banner.

The United States, South Korea and others have accused North Korea of using foreign detainees has hostages to secure diplomatic concessions.

President Donald Trump says that he appreciates China's efforts to exert pressure on North Korea, but "it has not worked out". He had originally traveled to North Korea as part of a tour group when he was detained at Pyongyang's airport in January 2016.

Doctors at the Cincinnati Medical Center, where Mr Warmbier was treated following his return to the U.S. on 13 June, determined he suffered from "unresponsive wakefulness", also known as persistent vegetative state, due to "severe neurological injury".

Three Americans remain in custody in the North. Fred Warmbier, the student's father, has said he disbelieves this account.

In meetings at the State Department involving US and Chinese diplomats and defence chiefs, North Korea was to get "top billing", according to Susan Thornton, the senior USA diplomat for East Asia.

The death of Warmbier this week, after his release from 17 months of imprisonment in Pyongyang, has further complicated Trump's approach to North Korea, his top national security challenge. North Korea accuses Washington and South Korea of sending spies to overthrow its government.

He said Warmbier's death shows "we must now have the perception that North Korea is an irrational regime", but that dialogue with the North is still needed because sanctions and pressure haven't resolved the North Korea nuclear issue.

"It's a total disgrace what happened to Otto", Trump said yesterday.

Moon said that while 'we can not know for sure that North Korea killed Mr Warmbier. Jack Reed, D-R.I., the ranking member, at the start of a hearing at the Capitol in Washington today.

"What you are seeing I think is the American people's frustration with the regime that provokes and provokes and provokes and basically [is] playing outside the rules, plays fast and loose with the truth, that sort of thing".
