Deadly north London incident near mosque a 'terrorist attack': Mayor Khan

London vehicle hits pedestrians police say'number of casualties

A group of men huddled together to condemn the "terror attack" outside the mosque, where people had been engaging in Ramadan.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "The gentleman went straight down this road, people were just conversing, talking, just doing what we're doing". Two of them are seriously injured.

The vehicle reportedly veered off the road into crowds near the Finsbury Park mosque but it was unclear whether the collision was deliberate.

The Interior MInister Amber Rudd said police "immediately" treated the incident as a suspected terrorist attack.

But Finsbury Park Mosque, an unassuming five-story redbrick building opposite the station, which opened in 1994, has been the area's most famous venue in recent years.

He has been taken to hospital as a precaution and will be taken into custody once discharged, a spokesman added.

According to multiple reports and social media posts, the van ran over people leaving the Finsbury Park Mosque.

Witnesses said the road was "backed up" with police cars, ambulance and fire engines. There were men, old men and women, no children.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said following that attack that there had been a 40-percent increase in racist incidents in the city and a fivefold increase in the number of anti-Muslim incidents. "It appears from eyewitness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia", he said. David Robinson, 41, who arrived just after the accident, said: "We saw lots of people shouting and lots of people injured".

Police said a suspect was quickly and calmly turned over to the police, and that no one else was found in the van.

People had been attending prayers in the area as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

British counter-terrorism officers have joined regular police to help investigate the incident, according to the Guardian.

The incident comes at a time when emotions are high in the United Kingdom, in the wake of a series of deadly terrorist attacks.

Eight other injured people were taken to hospitals after the crash early Monday morning.

"One man was pronounced dead at the scene", Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement.

The force also dismissed reports that the van driver produced a knife, saying: "At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries".

One witness told CNN it was clear that the attacker at Finsbury Park had deliberately targeted Muslims.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the awful attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect", he said.

Emergency services are on the scene on Seven Sister Road in London after a van struck and injured pedestrians.

Arsenal Football Club's Emirates Stadium is located close by, while further up Seven Sisters Road is the green space of Finsbury Park, which opened in 1869 and gives the area its name.

A van slammed into Muslim worshippers near a mosque in north London early this morning, killing at least one and injuring 10, British police and Islamic officials said. The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, said he was "totally shocked". "There has been one person arrested".
