Defense Rests in Michelle Carter Texting Case

Over the course of many texts to Carter about depression and hopelessness, Roy spoke often of killing himself and going to heaven, Breggin said.

Attorney Joe Cataldo, center, walks past his client Michelle Carter as he returns to the defense table in Bristol Juvenile Court, after a sidebar with Judge Lawrence Moniz, Tuesday, June 13, 2017, in Taunton, Mass.

Moniz said he will alert the clerk's office when he has reviewed all testimony and exhibits, and his verdict will be announced the following day. However, just three months before Conrad Roy committed suicide allegedly at the urging of her texting, Carter switched from Prozac to Celexa, becoming "involuntarily intoxicated".

Carter wrote that she "told him to get back in". At the same time, she was texting her friends that Roy had gone missing while still talking to him.

Breggin and Rayburn had sparred yesterday over whether Carter could have fabricated claims to friends that she had engaged in cutting as a form of self harm.

Mr Roy, then 18, was found dead on July 13, 2014, from carbon monoxide poisoning in his vehicle, which was parked at a Kmart auto park in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.

Prosecutor Maryclare Flynn said in opening statements that Carter "used Conrad as a pawn in a sick game of life and death for attention".

Both witnesses appeared to back assertions by Carter's attorney, Joseph Cataldo, that Roy had long contemplated suicide and was depressed partly because of physical and verbal abuse from family members.

"I think this is going to be a close case", Larry Cunningham, a former prosecutor and vice dean at St. John's University School of Law in NY, says in this week's issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Person of Interest in BET Weekend Robbery
Law enforcement authorities are saying that the robbers also slashed tires and stole a hubcap before they left. This is not her first run in with the law - Kim, born Kimberly Denise Jones , did jail time in 2005.

"I think she's going through a lot of very weird things inside her head", Breggin said.

While legal experts say Ms Carter may have encouraged him to take his own life, they have questioned whether it is enough to secure a conviction under involuntary manslaughter.

Testimony regarding text messages from Carter's cell phone was also heard in court. Judge Lawrence Moniz will decide her fate after Ms Carter waived her right to a jury.

Her lawyers said she had a host of other "frailties", including a severe eating disorder.

Rayburn also pointed to Carter's texts to her friend Samantha Boardman in which she said she felt responsible for Roy's death- and admitted she was afraid the texts would be discovered.

But her lawyers say she had initially tried to make Roy seek help. "The evidence of the texting is overwhelming that Conrad Roy was on this path to take his own life for years". In it, he told her "we will meet up in Heaven".

The defence also sought to minimise Ms Carter's role in her boyfriend's life, saying the pair were in a "long-term texting relationship" and had met in person only a handful of times.

"I love you and greatly appreciate ur effort and kindness towards me", Roy wrote in a handwritten note in a spiral notebook. Breggin said it started between June 29 and July 2, 2014, but he wasn't clear when it ended.

"When he is scared, she orders him to do it", Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Katie Rayburn argued.
