Dem: Congress will begin impeachment if Trump fires Mueller, Rosenstein

US President Donald Trump is not under any investigation for obstruction of justice in a probe into his possible collusion with Russian Federation, his attorney says.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday night that Trump himself is under investigation by special counsel Bob Mueller for the possibility that he obstructed justice in his decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey. Mueller was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and has expansive powers to probe any matters that develop from his initial investigation.

"Let me be clear - the president's not under investigation, as James Comey said in his testimony, that the president was not the target of investigation on three different occasions", Sekulow said. Thirty-seven percent of respondents said that they don't believe Trump impeded the investigations, and another 3% said that they didn't know, or else, refrained from answering the question. "The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources that were purportedly leaking information to The Washington Post about a potential investigation of the president".

"The best thing that could happen for the president, and the country, is a full and credible investigation", Rubio said.

Sekulow responded that Trump had been getting at a "constitutional issue". So when the Republicans fired him, the Democrats now want to investigate.

The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation. Rubio says it's important for the American people to know how the Russians interfered because we have more elections coming up.

Several White House officials and Trump associates insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the president's views of the unfolding investigation.

A person who spoke with Trump on Tuesday told the New York Times that the president was pleased by the intentional ambiguity of his position on firing Mueller. "That is not how the rule of law works, and Congress will not allow the president to so egregiously overstep his authority".

Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Trump is "returning us to the forgotten rhetoric of the Cold War". And Trump himself took aim at the senior Justice Department official responsible for appointing Mueller, accusing him on Twitter of leading a "Witch Hunt".

The social media platform's 140-character limit barred Trump from adding more context, Sekulow said, though the president often uses a string of consecutive tweets to get his point across.

Trump also reportedly asked Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo to intercede with Comey on the Flynn case, then later asked Coats and National Security Agency chief Michael S. Rogers to state publicly that Trump was not personally under investigation.
