Democrats Hold Senate Floor To Protest GOP Health Care Efforts

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) used President Trump's words against him on Monday evening, saying she agrees that the House-passed GOP healthcare bill is "mean".

In addition the new obstructionism, the Democrats will be holding a "talkathon" Monday night.

Senators settled in Monday as Democrats plan to slow-walk all action until Republicans relent on their secret health care negotiations and debate their Obamacare replacement in public. Bernie Sanders said he is "in favor" of Democrats using parliamentary tactics that could essentially bring the Senate to a halt.

The protest is being streamed live on Facebook, and Democratic lawmakers are asking Americans to join their protest under the hashtags #ShowUsTheBill and #HoldTheFloor.

Several Democrats moved for the healthcare legislation to be referred to Senate committees for hearings, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused. The AHCA was roundly criticized for going too far in cutting crucial services that would largely affect poor and elderly Americans. But Democrats are attempting to draw attention to the behind-closed-door process that Republicans are taking in drafting the bill. But Republicans have struggled to coalesce around a bill, with moderates and conservatives pushing in different directions. When the CBO score comes in, many if not most of those 23 million who would lose insurance under the House bill will lose it under the Senate bill.

While the Senate is crafting its own legislation, the House-passed American Health Care Act is viewed unfavorably by a majority of Americans - 55 percent - compared with 31 percent who viewed it favorably, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll released in May.

"Until I see the bill and the (Congressional Budget Office) assessment of the bill, I'm not going to feel comfortable taking a position", said Sen.

"Republicans are drafting this bill in secret because they're ashamed of it, plain and simple", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, shortly before Democrats took to the Senate floor in anger.

McConnell is using closed-door meetings among Republicans to write the bill. The aides say leadership is leaning toward just a three-year phase out of the program, which is more generous than the House bill, but still less than the seven years that Portman and other Republicans in Medicaid expansion states have requested.

There's a reason Republicans want to Trumpcare on the down low - even Fox News is unable to spin the unpopularity of the bill, which is essentially a tax cut for the rich masquerading as health care reform.

Organizers of the January 21 Women's March and the April 22 March for Science are involved, along with Indivisible, the group that has aimed to focus grass-roots progressives on influencing lawmakers; Organizing for Action, the activist group associated with former president Barack Obama; Our Revolution, born out of the presidential campaign of Sen.
