Despite tweet, lawyer says President Trump not under investigation

Finally, we know that Muellers investigators are also looking for “any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, ” as the Post phrased it. The White House used a memo he wrote to justify Mr Trump's decision to fire Mr Comey, but Mr Trump's firing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director may now be part of the probe. "There is not an investigation of the president of the United States, period". Thereupon, we were treated to heated debates - including an uncharacteristically cringe-inducing one Fox's Chris Wallace conducted with Sekulow - over whether Trump was acknowledging that he is under investigation ... or been told he was under investigation ... or ... something.

On Monday, though, senior adviser Kellyanne Conway advised the public to not pay attention to the words in the tweet, because even though Trump appeared to fully admit that's he's being investigated, Conway said, well, he's not. Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, sent out spokespeople and surrogates with a far-fetched cover story to explain the dismissal, and then told NBCs Lester Holt that the real reason for the firing was Comeys pursuit of the Russian Federation investigation. These investigations are focused upon the alleged links with Russians that some people in Trump's campaign team maintained before the elections.

"The President is not a subject or target of an investigation".

But it would deal a political blow to the White House in the battle of perception, since the idea that Trump is not under investigation has been at the centerpiece of his administration's defense strategy. As Rachel noted on Friday's show, the White House balked soon after, arguing that just because the president wrote, "I am being investigated", it doesn't mean he's being investigated.

Of course, that's what the president said last week. And that mild statement, vigorously denied by Trump himself, and uncorroborated by any third party, is apparently most of what a charge of obstruction would be based on - that, plus the fact that Trump fired Comey.

Other presidents have managed to compartmentalize investigations and go about the business of governing, but Trump seems consumed by the Mueller probe. The special counsel's office did not respond to a request for comment on the report. Perhaps they harbored some resentment against President Trump himself, and took pleasure in his discomfiture.

The other rumor that's been going around is that the president is not happy with special counsel Robert Mueller and was - at one point anyway - on the brink of firing him, on the ground that he's biased. The lessons of history suggest such traumas raise questions of political legitimacy and constitutional process that have the potential to sour life in Washington for years in the future.

Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, said the president was only referring to a news report.

Chaos unfurls in Washington as Trump continues to be at odds with his legal team, often tweeting out information about the probe that his lawyers have to dismiss or walk back.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN's Evan Perez that investigators for Mueller would speak with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers.
