Di Maria sentenced to one year in jail after admitting tax fraud

Barcelona's Lionel Messi was convicted of tax fraud a year ago and was handed a suspended 21-month sentence.

Angel Di Maria will certainly pay the amount and avoid jail term, but the question which is probably on the minds of most football fans is who will be the next player to be accused or caught of tax fraud.

The Sun reports former Manchester United and Real Madrid winger Di Maria has admitted to tax fraud.

He has reportedly made a deal with Spanish authorities to avoid a Supreme Court trial, which found his fellow Argentina captain Lionel Messi guilty of tax evasion, sentencing the Barcelona forward to 21 months in prison.

The guilty pleas of Di María, Mascherano and Messi would suggest this is not always the case and Mourinho and Ronaldo will need to be certain the offshore companies they set up to receive their image-rights payments are legitimate.

Under Spanish law, a first-time offender is not required to serve time in jail for a sentence below two years.

Traders test OPEC "whatever it takes" resolve to defend oil price
Iran and Saudi Arabia are historic rivals and Zangeneh said competition among member states was fierce. OPEC compliance hit 108% in the month, with non-OPEC participants achieving 100%, the source said.

For these crimes, Di Maria is imposed an economic fine of about 800,000 euros.

The 29-year-old played for Real Madrid from 2010-2014 before sealing a £59.6 million move to Manchester United in 2014 prior to joining PSG for a cut-price £44 million.

Sentences of under two years are suspended in Spain providing the convicted has no criminal record.

Cristiano Ronaldo had threatened to leave Real Madrid over a perceived witch hunt by said authorities in relation to his tax affairs.

It comes a day after former boss Jose Mourinho was also accused of tax evasion by Spanish prosecutors. This is similar to deals struck with the Spanish taxman by fellow Argentinians Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi a year ago.
