Diana Taurasi breaks WNBA career scoring record

The game was halted after the layup, to which the Los Angeles crowd gave Taurasi a round of applause.

Taurasi needed 14 points going into Sunday night's game to reach the record of 7488 points.

Thompson, the WNBA's previous all-time leading scorer, played for the Houston Comets, Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm from 1997 through 2013 and earned spots on eight different All-WNBA teams. "I am excited that it is Diana and it is my absolute pleasure to pass the torch on to her", Thompson said in a statement.

"She and I have shared so many awesome moments throughout our basketball careers, whether it was gold medals, championships or All-Star Games", Thompson said in a release.

It only took the Mercury's star 13 seasons to become the league's top scorer. She has done wonderful things and I am so grateful that I've been able to share many of those with her.

Taurasi then made four free throws and after Phoenix's Kahleah Copper hit a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left, Taurasi added two more free throws to clinch the win for Phoenix.

Taurasi, who averages 18.1 points per game this year, passed Tamika Catchings (7,380 points) for second on the WNBA scoring list early this season. Williams finished with a season-high 15 points.
