Donald Trump's lawyer denies the president is under federal investigation

Senate judiciary probe may review obstruction of justice

Jay Sekulow, an attorney for Donald Trump, on Sunday said the president is not being investigated for obstruction of justice.

Were Trump's apparent confessions that he fired Comey to relieve the pressure he felt from the Russian Federation investigation enough to warrant a new investigation of Trump for obstruction of justice? However, Sekulow has said that the tweet was the President's response to a media article about the non- existent investigation, a direct critique of the lack of authentic sources for the news that was published.

Sekulow says that Trump hasn't been notified of any investigation.

On Fox News Sunday, Sekulow said that he was certain the president was not under investigation because he had received no notification or other indication that he was.

"But just because you haven't been notified doesn't mean you're not under investigation", Cuomo shot back. But Sekulow, speaking on his own radio show, seemed to have changed tack about Trump.

As the probe into Russia's possible involvement with the Trump campaign proceeds, CNN reports that the president is hurling insults at Rosenstein and Robert Mueller, the special counsel appointed to look into the matter.

Adding to questions surrounding the special counsel investigation is the fact that Rosenstein, as the current deputy attorney general, is the official who is in charge of the special counsel's activities.

Schiff said he doesn't buy the idea, floated by Trump ally Newt Gingrich, that the president can not commit obstruction by firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who serves at the president's pleasure. I did not understand the President to be talking about the broader investigation into Russian Federation or possible links to his campaign. The obstruction investigation, which the Washington Post first reported was underway late last week, is just one of a whole host of pressing issues reportedly on the docket for Mueller's team.

Ironically, June 19 was the 45th anniversary of the first Washington Post story about Watergate.

The two were formerly law partners at Washington firm WilmerHale.

While Sekulow did brush off all allegations of investigations being carried out into the President's actions, he did later let slip about an obstruction of justice investigation that may be directed at Trump. Sekulow said Trump "thought it was in the best interest of the American people" to fire Comey. Sekulow also spoke to Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union" and Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday".

"Fairly interesting that Kushner is putting together a more serious legal team than the president is", MSNBC Justice and Security Analyst Matthew Miller noted on Twitter.

The committee sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday. It also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) says he sees "evidence" of collusion and obstruction, "but I'm not prepared to say that there's proof you could take to a jury".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified to Congress that Trump wanted a memo laying out the case for firing Comey. Comey was among those critics who cited Lynch's June 2016 tarmac meeting with former President Bill Clinton as a sign the Justice Department was not capable of an independent investigation into Hillary Clinton.

The FBI "doesn't sit around all day and read tweets", said Rubio, a Republican from Florida who's a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

And Senate Intelligence Committee member Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

Trump's tweets following the report appeared to confirm the investigation, but his lawyer said it only appeared that way because of the character limit on Twitter. He said it could be done "maybe by the end of the year".
