Eastwood: Two weeks enough time to strike Stormont deal

The parliamentary loses sustained by the Conservatives can be attributed to several causes, including law and order issues, especially after charges that May had weakened the British police force when she was home secretary by decreasing their number at a critical time.

May is facing mounting pressure to resign due to her handling of the situation and tensions have been heightened by her failure to meet with victims in wake of the tragedy.

In 1985, the IRA attempted to assassinate then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher with a time-delay bomb planted at the hotel she and her cabinet were staying at in Brighton.

A leader of the infamous Love Ulster campaign, Mr Frazer is unhappy at Mr Adams' involvement in the ongoing talks to establish a Government in Northern Ireland.

The Conservatives, who have 317 MPs, are looking to strike a deal with the DUP, who have 10. "It's early days still, but we've had more access in the last week to government quite broadly than we did in the previous four or five months".

Different DUP sources say different things about the approach to Brexit.

May faces the task of satisfying both the pro-European and eurosceptic factions of her party, keeping Northern Ireland calm and negotiating a divorce with 27 other European Union members whose combined economic might is more than five times that of Britain.

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has suggested Theresa May will be in breach of the Good Friday Agreement if she goes into Government with the DUP.

Conservative Party sources say May wants to show her government is up and running but her loss of authority in last week's election will make it harder to handle a hectic agenda - Brexit talks with the European Union, tackling a slowing economy, a political crisis in Ireland, and a devastating fire in London.

And some fear the viability of Northern Ireland's fragile peace - which has held since 1998 after decades of inter-community violence known as The Troubles - could rest on the arrangement, with doubts around the United Kingdom government's neutrality.

"Everyone fears these talks of a hard border", he said, "but I agree it must be a soft border that will ensure the goods from both countries can move easily between them".

But speaking in Dublin after a meeting with the new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, the DUP leader Arlene Foster said it was down to Sinn Fein whether an agreement is reached.

The determination of Theresa May to retain her post as Prime Minister has even put the Good Friday Agreement in doubt.

Ahead of the talks, Michelle O'Neill, Sinn Fein's leader in the Northern Ireland Stormont assembly, said: "I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".

During that scandal, DUP First Minister Arlene Foster ignored repeated calls for her to step aside while an investigation is carried out into the scheme - which could cost taxpayers in the North in the region of £400 million (about €460 million), possibly more.
