Easyjet flight to London makes unplanned landing after conversation with 'terrorist content'

The passengers on the easy Jet flight were horrified when the pilot asked them to vote on whether to take off as there was only a'50/50 chance of both engines working

FILE - In this February 24, 2014 file photo, EasyJet and Lufthansa planes are parked at the airport Cologne-Bonn in Cologne, Germany.

Seventeen arriving flights were diverted to other airports, 20 departing flights were significantly delayed and two flights were cancelled, the airport said.

An easyJet flight headed to London made an emergency landing in Germany after three men allegedly had a "terrorism-related" conversation, police said.

After passengers reported the trio, the EasyJet pilot made the decision to divert the flight to the nearest airport.

In a joint statement, police and the prosecutor's office said the plane had been released after an intensive search and the men were not known to authorities.

The landing caused the cessation of all inbound and outbound flight activity at Cologne Airport from 7 p.m. until almost 10 p.m. that evening, according to a statement by the airport police press office.

Authorities also carried out a "controlled explosion" on a backpack belonging to one of the men that contained wires, but these turned out to be part of a charging device, according to the AP.

After being evacuated, passengers were taken to a gate to be checked by police and the airport said experts had "blown up" a piece of luggage.

"According to the witnesses, these had been the subject of terrorist content".

Three British men are being held over suspicious conversations held on board a UK-bound easyJet flight.

A spokesman for Cologne-Bonn airport said: "A plane on the way from Ljubljana to London has landed (Saturday) evening around 6.30pm in Cologne unplanned".

The spokesman said passengers had to undergo a check after landing.

"No evidence was found", a local police spokesman said.

easyJet said they would be able to continue their journey to London on Sunday morning.

The easyJet pilot was concerned enough to divert the flight, landing in a remote corner of an airport in Cologne, where passengers were evacuated off the plane via slides.
