Emirates Team New Zealand hold early advantage in Americas Cup

Peter Burling helmsman for Emirates Team New Zealand left shakes hands with skipper and helmsman Jimmy Spithill for Oracle Team USA right in front of the America's Cup trophy known as the

Burling, the 26-year-old whose pre-start prowess was called into question during challenger qualifying, won the start of the second race and New Zealand steadily built their lead.

Oracle Team USA's track record of performing when their backs are against the wall and the intervening five days should set up a fascinating showdown to the competition as both teams race to modify their boats and improve performance.

"I think these next five days will be the most important five days of the campaign", he said.

"If we were forced to race day after day we'd be in some serious trouble at the moment". But we had our opportunities.

"Nothing will escape our eyes I can guarantee you that in these next five days", said Spithill. Whether it's system related, appendage related, sailing technique or strategy, we are going to look at absolutely everything.

"It feels like we were still a long way from where we want to be".

"We've been in a situation like this before and we've had less time".

"We need to go back and use those days wisely". We had our chances, but these guys made fewer mistakes. "We basically handed that first race to them".

“We were far from our best today and we ‘re obviously going to put some hours in now, have a good look through all the video all the data, sharpen up and we will come out swinging tomorrow.

The Americans roared back to win 9-8, with British sailor Ben Ainslie playing a key role after he replaced John Kostecki as the team's tactician. "We knew to do that we had to win eight races and so we have to keep on battling to ensure that is what we do".

However, Burling did not have it all his own way and mistakes began to creep in.

He is an America's Cup rookie.

Oracle fell back, however, allowing the New Zealand team to secure their second win.

Coutts has been the CEO of Oracle Team USA since it beat Alinghi in 2010. However, it was not to materialise.

An early mistake in race three proved costly for the USA team and they were unable to fight back as their rivals triumphed by nearly a minute.

The Kiwi team crossed the line 48.7 seconds ahead of the US team.

The Australian's crew was powerless to stop the Kiwi boat on the water in Bermuda on Monday (NZT) as Peter Burling sailed a near flawless two races to extend their advantage to 3-0 in the best of nine series.

The two-time defending America's Cup champions are foundering badly against hotshot young helmsman Peter Burling and Emirates Team New Zealand, who are threatening to sail - and cycle - away with the oldest trophy in worldwide sports.

While it is not over until it is over, as the Kiwis will surely testify having surrendered an 8-1 lead to Oracle in San Francisco in 2013, the past two days will have been deeply concerning for Spithill and his crew.
