Eritrea says Qatar has not explained 'hasty' withdrawal

Addis Ababa - The African Union urged Djibouti and Eritrea to remain calm and exercise restraint on Saturday after Djibouti accused its neighbour of occupying disputed territory along their border following the withdrawal of Qatari peacekeepers.

The Chadian diplomat further said that the regional body is ready to assist Djibouti and Eritrea to normalise their relations and promote good neighbourliness within the framework of relevant AU instruments.

A mediation effort led by the Gulf Kingdom of Qatar in 2010 led to a Qatari peacekeeping force being stationed in the Eritrea-Djibouti border.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the United Nations has received written communications from Djibouti and Eritrea "and we're taking a look at it". Doha announced on June 14 that it had pulled its contingent out, days after the East African countries sided with Saudi Arabia and its allies in their standoff with Qatar.

Authorities in Asmara were not immediately available for comment.

Qatar's foreign ministry did not give a reason for the move.

These countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which Doha strongly denies.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the world body has received written communications from Djibouti and Eritrea "and we're taking a look at it".

"They also have a territorial dispute with Ethiopia which has been simmering for years. Eritrea now sees this as an opportunity to come back from the cold and maybe get aid from the United Nations which it desperately needs".

Djibouti's ambassador to Ethiopia, Mohammed Idriss Farah, said Friday his government is waiting for military confirmation on whether Eritrean forces still control the contested area.

A border dispute between Eritrea and Djibouti resulted in armed clashes in June 2008, leaving several people dead from both sides. The UN Security Council then requested both sides to withdraw from the area, before the neighbors accepted a Qatari request to mediate and deploy peacekeepers. Eritrea had initially denied making any incursions, accusing Djibouti of launching unprovoked attacks.
