Favourites Portugal, Mexico meet early in Confederations Cup

Hector Moreno's stoppage-time equaliser earned Mexico a 2-2 draw with Portugal at the Confederations Cup on Sunday.

Portugal is making its first appearance in the Confederations Cup, the eight-nation competition played by continental champions plus host Russian Federation and World Cup victor Germany.

Ronaldo has scored 18 goals in his last 11 matches, including two in Portugal's 3-0 win at Latvia in a European World Cup qualifier last week, the team's last match before the Confederations Cup opener against Mexico.

Ricardo Quaresma opened the scoring for Portugal in the 34th minute on a magical assist from Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. Portugal will play Mexico in a Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match scheduled for.

"Since I joined the national team I've felt very welcomed", Silva said. Portugal will play against Mexico in a Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match sche. There are two games to go and that's why we're cool, we're at ease.

Mexico had a corner kick right at the death and Hector Moreno headed home the crucial equalizer to send the entire Kazan Arena into the wilds. "They are a great team but we're pretty good too", the 56-year-old said. Portugal had a first-half goal by Nani disallowed after a video review, when the game was still scoreless.

In his next game, Silva scored a hat-trick against the Faroe Islands, when Ronaldo added one goal in another 6-0 victory.

He skipped the post-match press conference which he was supposed to attend as the man of the match.

Ronaldo burst forward, putting the Mexico defence on the back foot, before tracking back and picking out partner in crime Ricardo Quaresma with a deft through-ball in the area.

The Portugal captain could not control the ball to shoot but his brilliant pass between three defenders left Quaresma free to round keeper Guillermo Ochoa and tap into the empty net. Raphael Guerreiro miskicked a cross into the box, allowing Carlos Vela to play the ball back in for Hernandez to score. "We want to show that we are able to win more tournaments".

An entertaining encounter also saw an adjudication from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), who chalked off a Pepe goal for offside.

Fernando Santos threw on the highly-rated Andre Silva a minute later, and he almost restored Portugal's lead in the 84th minute but Ochoa produced a super save to keep out the striker's header.

While Vela was Mexico's best player Sunday, Mexico's main forward Javier Hernandez was horrendous.

There were concerns that the match could be suspended after warnings from Federation Internationale de Football Association against homophobic chants by Mexican fans, but they were only heard a couple of times during the match and did not cause any disruption.
