Fellow Republicans press Donald Trump about Comey tapes

Melania Trump son Barron move into White House

The president has suggested several times, but not confirmed, that tapes of his private talks with Comey exist - a prospect the ex-FBI chief has emphatically welcomed.

The request is a sign of escalating fallout from riveting testimony from Comey last week of undue pressure from Trump. Trump has publicly implied that he has tape recordings of private conversations he had with ex-FBI Director James Comey in the White House.

He asserted that nothing in Comey's testimony to the Senate pointed to collusion with Russian Federation or obstruction of justice. Whether that hearing will be public or closed is not yet known.

The president's outside legal team is being led by a longtime Trump attorney, Marc Kasowitz.

Mr. Comey testified that he made a decision to memorialize all of his meetings and conversations with President Trump because he was "uncomfortable" with those one-on-one conversations from the start. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the committee, both said Thursday they believed Comey's account of the events. Charles Grassley of Iowa.

Comey testified last week to the Intelligence committee.

"I would be fine with issuing a subpoena, but that most likely would come from the special counsel's office", Collins told CNN.

Trump's aides have dodged questions from reporters for months about whether conversations relevant to the Russian Federation investigation have been recorded, and so did the president in a series of teases. He further denied asking Comey for his "loyalty", contradicting Comey's detailed sworn testimony about a private dinner the two men had in the White House. And she says the president should voluntarily hand them over to the Senate Intelligence committee and the special counsel. And she doesn't "understand why the president just doesn't clear this matter up once and for all".

Trump Tweets He's Currently Under Investigation
The president tweeted Friday, "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great". Hans Nichols of MSNBC , reporting from the White House , said the tweet is remarkable for two reasons.

Comey said he refused on all points, told the committee of the detailed memos he had written after his conversations with Trump, and said he hoped those conversations were taped because he is confident of the veracity of his testimony.

The former bureau director touched on this issue during his testimony last week before the Senate Intelligence committee.

But when asked by reporters about the tapes, Trump chose to be coy.

Mr Bharara says Mr Trump called him twice before the inauguration, to "shoot the breeze".

Comey had been leading an FBI investigation into several Trump aides and their contacts with the Russian government - which U.S. intelligence agencies say tried to tilt the 2016 election in Trump's favor - before being fired.

Back in March, Mr Sessions stepped aside from overseeing a federal investigation into contacts between Russia and the Trump campaign after he acknowledged meeting twice past year with the Russian diplomat, Sergey Kislyak.

Comey said he had hoped releasing the information via the media would prompt the appointment of a special counsel to handle the Russian Federation probe, a ploy that ultimately proved successful. Mr Comey also has said Mr Sessions did not respond when he complained he did not "want to get time alone with the president again".

Another Republican senator, Lindsey Graham of SC, told CBS he thought it would be "inappropriate for the president to testify publicly".
