Fiat Chrysler CEO says 2018 targets unaffected by diesel woes

Clark Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram dealership in Methuen Massachusetts

West Virginia University came out with its findings this week after its Center for Alternative Fuels Engines and Emissions (CAFEE) tested several Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with the EcoDiesel engine in both laboratory and on-road driving scenarios. That's according to Dan Carder, director of CAFEE.

The EPA and California Air Resources Board accused Fiat Chrysler in January of using undisclosed software to illegally allow excess diesel emissions in 104,000 USA 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks.

Mike Dahl, head of vehicle safety and regulatory compliance for Fiat Chrysler's USA unit, responded in a separate email that the company was working diligently and understood the EPA's concerns.

The EPA notice was the result of a probe that arose out of regulators' investigation of rival Volkswagen AG's (VOWG_p.DE) excess diesel emissions.

The researchers didn't go as far as accusing FCA of diesel cheating. FCA has firmly denied using "cheat devices" to pass USA pollution tests, although it's offering a software update to improve emissions performance on its vehicles. "FCA US believes this will address the agencies' concerns regarding the emissions software calibrations in those vehicles". FCA says this raises a number of issues as the CAFEE tests were conducted at much higher speeds and with an additional 600-700 lbs (272-317 kg) of payload than the EPA tests.

After completing a yearlong study, researchers at the University of California San Diego and Ruhr-Universitat Bochum in Germany allege that supplier giant Bosch created the software that allowed.

It remains to be seen whether FCA will weather this latest diesel controversy with minimal financial toll; the EPA has indicated the automaker faces a potential $4.6 billion penalty for all 104,000 Jeep and Ram models alleged to possess this software, though real-world penalties could be lower.
