Finsbury Park: Casualties being treated after vehicle smashes into pedestrians in London

The van attack at Finsbury Park targetted Muslim worshippers leaving Finsbury Park mosque, according to reports.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the awful attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

Video posted online of the aftermath of the attack showed a scene of chaos as people tried to help the injured.

Someone in the crowd is heard yelling, "No-one touch him!"

Finsbury Park mosque was once infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza.

The driver was arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution.

"We should make clear that if this attack is confirmed as a deliberate terrorist attack then this should be classed as an act of terrorism".

The driver of the van, a 48-year-old man, was found detained by members of public at the scene, police said.

Muslim Council of Britain secretary general Harun Khan condemned the attack and also urged calm.

He said: "During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship. It appears from eyewitness accounts that the perpetrator was motivated by Islamophobia", he said.

One resident told the Press Association he jumped out of the way. Eight of the injured were taken to hospitals and the rest were treated at the scene.

The attack comes during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when people attend prayers at night. The driver would undergo a mental health assessment in due course, police said.

Police also stated that no "knife injuries" have been reported at this point.

The crash occurred near the Finsbury Park mosque.

Islington's northern part is represented in Parliament by Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour Party.

A message on the council's Twitter feed read: "We have been informed that a van has run over worshippers as they left #FinsburyPark Mosque".

Witnesses at the scene said an elderly man who had collapsed at a bus stop was being tended to when the vehicle struck pedestrians.

The council tweeted that its prayers were with the victims. The man, who did not want to be named, said: "The gentleman went straight down this road, people were just conversing, talking, just doing what we're doing". Many police cars and ambulances were responding.

Further details were not immediately available. One person has been arrested. I was shocked, shocked, shocked.

Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the scene on Seven Sisters Road at 12:20 a.m. Monday. London Ambulance Service said on Twitter.

Transportation officials said roads in the area were being closed.

"In a matter of seconds a police auto was here".
