Four inmates including one Malaysian escape Bali jail using tunnel

Australian Man Escapes Bali's Kerobokan Jail Through Secret Tunnel

An Australian jailed for a year for using another man's passport has escaped from Kerobokan jail.

Indonesian police say four foreign inmates have escaped from a prison on the resort island of Bali.

The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) quoted a source as saying the escaped foreigners were last seen during sahur time, when Muslims eat to prepare for their Ramadan fast. Iliev, 43, was serving seven-year sentence for money laundering, while King, 50, had been serving seven and a half for drug offences as well.

It is believed the four made a dash for it through a tunnel found behind the jail's medical clinic. "It is filled with water", the source said.

Davidson, 33, who fled drug charges in Perth, spent a year in Bali before he was jailed for using fraudulent travel documents.

Shaun Edward Davidson waiting to be transferred to Kerobokan jail in Bali after being charged with possessing another person's identity and overstaying his visa in April previous year.

When Davidson arrived in Bali in January 2015 he said he spent several months just "partying and boxing" before arousing the suspicion of authorities when he signed into a Kuta guest house under a passport with the name Michael John Bayman - claiming the photo was taken when he was "chubby".

Bali authorities are launching increased checks at the airport, port and bus terminals to apprehend the prisoners.

Davidson was sentenced to one year in Kerobokan last September for immigration offences after he used another man's passport.

Despite overcrowding in Kerobokan, he said it wasn't the "living hell" he thought it would be.

Ngurah Rai airport immigration officer Mohamad Soleh told Fairfax Media in April past year that a report was made of a foreigner staying in Kuta who was suspected of overstaying his visa.

"We will investigate if someone helping them from the outside".

The prisoners were identified as Australian Shaun Edward Davidson, Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov, Indian Sayed Muhammad and Malaysian Tee Kok King.

Sayed Mohammad Said was the last prisoner seen during morning prayers and again at 6.30am this morning. The 15-meter-long tunnel, with an opening measuring only 75 centimeters by 50 centimeters, emerges on Jl.
