FSU alum Brooks Koepka wins US Open

A par on the final hole tied Rory McIlroy's record score to par at 16 under for a four-shot victory.

By the time the final groups reached the turn, the championship became a three-man shootout.

Brooks Koepka is closing in on the U.S. Open title.

Florida native Koepka becomes the seventh consecutive first-time major victor, a run started by Jason Day at the 2015 US PGA Championship.

The Globe's most recent sports headlines delivered to your inbox every morning.

"On 10 I just hit a poor putt, not enough speed, and 11 the same thing", he said, underlining the importance the putt on 13.

Brian Harman had the lead at 12 under coming into the day. He had eight birdies and two bogeys. 14-16 to create plenty of distance between himself and the rest of the field.

Harman, a University of Georgia graduate, went into Sunday leading and hoping to win his first major.

On a blustery day which flustered so many, Koepka stayed cool, calm and very much collected to see off all-comers equal the lowest winning score to par in US Open history.

Brooks Koepka blitzed Erin Hills with a five-under 67 on Sunday to win the 117th U.S. Open by four shots over Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama. Really the first time in this situation in a major?

One by one the contenders dropped off Sunday afternoon.

Growing up in Florida and with a great-uncle who played in the major leagues, Koepka's first love was baseball, but somehow life led him onto the golf course. Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Reed, and Si Woo Kim only managed even-par or worse.

Justin Thomas, the hero of the third round after a record-breaking nine-under-par 63, saw his challenge wilt with a three-over-par 75. The last two champions, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, went on to finish in the top 10 at The Open Championship the same year.

By the time Matsuyama - six behind at the start of the final round - rolled in his eighth birdie of the day on the 18th, he was just one adrift of Koepka, who had five holes still to complete.

"I feel like I'm playing at the highest level", Fowler said. I thought I played pretty solid on Tuesday.

It capped quite a journey for the Wellington native.

If any doubt remained over who was going to succeed Dustin Johnson as the victor of the year's second major, Koepka ensured his victory was inevitable by rolling in yet another birdie on the par-three 16th.

Koepka settled for a tap-in par, but that didn't matter.

He bogeyed the 12th and 13th holes.

It was only fitting that Koepka left Erin Hills with yet another record matched or broken.

"It was kind of bombs away", he said.

One night in Scotland, he called his agent and wanted to come home, even though he was leading the tournament.

Only Matsuyama, of the top five, really made a run for the title, but Koepka's surge in that back nine proved to be too much for the Japanese to catch up.
