Golfer Koepka wins his first major at US Open

In fact you have to look down to 17th place on the leaderboard before you find a major victor in South African Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion.

Koepka was 16 under par for the tournament, and that matched the record set by Rory McIlroy when he won the U.S. Open at Congressional in 2011.

Tied for the lead with six holes to play, Koepka, 27, holed an 8-foot par putt on No. 13 that gave him confidence with his stroke and momentum to pour in birdies on the next three holes to turn the final hour into what amounted to a runaway victory.

"He's going to overpower golf courses, and he's got a great demeanor", said Bill Haas, who finished tied for fifth.

"It's truly an honour".

Koepka said the world number one had called him on Saturday, offering some advice which came in handy.

"I think I'll be more comfortable playing in the big events, and help me play better the next time", he said. And that I'll win if I stay patient and just keep doing what I'm doing. "I don't see it turning into a situation that gets out of control, like people saw in 1992. Unfortunately, that's really all I was dealt, so it's what I had to try to do".

"I felt like that has been the thing lately with me, why I haven't really played that well, I've been trying to win so badly. I felt like I've underachieved".

It wasn't to be for Chris Wood, who was on track to make the cut with a string of three birdies on the back-nine on Friday, but was undone by double-bogeys on two of his last four holes which left him two shots off the cut line at +3.

However, the 26-year-old from Southport then bogeyed the third, sixth and eighth and although he bounced back with a birdie on the ninth, he was unable to convert good chances early on the back nine before Koepka pulled away.

Fowler gave himself a break: "You kind of have to say, 'Hey, it's a major, I played well this week'". "Brooks drives it so long".

"I didn't play how I wanted to (in the final round)", Fleetwood told Sky Sports.

Neither Koepka, who won his first major in commanding fashion with a closing 67 for a 16 under total, nor Johnson, are known for their exuberance on the golf course and both could be described as men of few words, as evidenced by Koepka's response when asked if he could elaborate on Saturday's conversation.

"To be honest with you, it really was the putt, the par save on 13", Koepka said.

Right now, there may not be any sport in America where you can be as good as Koepka - nearly everyone in golf thinks that the ex-Florida State star, ranked No. 22 in the world, is a major figure of the game's future - and yet have so many genial, obsessed, talented players of your generation, your own buddies, who are constantly trying to grind you to dust by their sheer numbers.

The 28-year-old remained upbeat despite disappointment, putting it down to a lack of competitive golf this season. These guys play a different game.

"I thought it was a fantastic round of golf, given what we were dealing with to start the day", Spieth said. Either way, Koepka's record-tying 16-under 272 was far more than a runaway because he never once led the tournament until late yesterday afternoon.

On another day of low-scoring, Casey and compatriot Tommy Fleetwood were bunched on seven under alongside Americans Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman after the second round.

It was only fitting that Koepka left Erin Hills with yet another record matched or broken. But the U.S. Open trophy probably won't be the last Smith gets to hold. Surprisingly, that was his only victory until this, his breakthrough at major championship level. With the course's best defense non-existent, the narrative of par being your friend in a U.S. Open was flipped on its head.
