Greece to get 'more clarity' on debt relief plan

But Dijsselbloem said the ministers would agree to more "clarity" on debt relief, to be delivered at the end of Greece's bailout in 2018, even if the exact figures would only be provided later.

Arriving at the meeting of the of the finance ministers from the European countries that use the euro, Wolfgang Schaeuble said he was "optimistic that we will reach a result regarding the payout of the next tranche" of bailout loans.

Thursday's meeting was "essential" for the "future of Europe, democratic Europe and for a Europe of growth", Tsipras said in an emotional editorial published in French daily Le Monde today.

Greece's worldwide lenders prepared on Thursday to unblock as much as 8.5 billion euros (7.44 billion pounds) in loans that Athens desperately needs next month to pay its bills, and to give some idea of what debt relief they may offer over the long-term.

Papadimitriou said German resistance to debt relief for Greece raised questions about the very idea and structure of the euro zone.

Mr Dijsselbloem says the exit strategy will "enable Greece to stand on its own feet again next year". The Washington-based fund, which co-financed Greece's first two rescue programs, held off giving the country more loans until it becomes assured that Greece's 315 billion-euro debt will become sustainable.

Even so, June's Eurogroup conclusions fall short of a definite statement that the International Monetary Fund will consider Greece's debt sustainable.

Euclid Tsakalotos, Greece's finance minister, said he is "confident" about the prospects of a deal later.

We have got used to delays resulting from Greek politics - a referendum, elections, problems in parliament holding up economic policy reforms that Greece was required to make.

European creditors had promised some form of debt relief if Greece implemented austerity measures.

Greece avoided another potential brush with bankruptcy Thursday after striking a deal with European creditors to tide it over for the rest of the year and gained assurances that its repayment burden will be eased when it finally can stand on its own after almost a decade on financial life support.

Dijsselbloem said Thursday at the conclusion of the meeting of the eurozone's 19 finance ministers that an agreement was forged "on all elements". Greece is facing debt repayment in July.

The IMF, however, says euro zone assumptions on Greek economic growth and the country's ability to keep a high primary surplus are unrealistic and that Athens clearly needs debt relief if it is to win back investor confidence and return to market financing.

"We can't live on 300 euros (£260)!" they chanted, with some waving sticks.

"We take note of the Eurogroup discussion which we see as a first step towards securing debt sustainability", a spokesman of the European Central Bank said in an emailed statement.

Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk.

Among the measures offered to Greece was a possible 15-year extension in debt and interest payments due European creditors.
