Grenfell Tower disaster victims to be given £5500 each

Grenfell residents in ‘passionate angry’ exchanges with PM at Downing Street

After her flawed decision to call a snap general election saw the Conservatives lose their narrow majority earlier this month, May has now come under fire for her lacklustre response to the Grenfell Tower fire disaster.

As she left St Clement's Church following a visit lasting less than an hour, the PM faced cries of "coward" and "shame on you".

She further explained that a public inquiry would be strongly "government-led, government-controlled, government outcome", and would exclude residents nearly entirely.

He said the Prime Minister had met residents and heard their "heart-rending stories".

Maitlis asked: "Prime minister, you've come here today to the BBC instead of doing the interview at the site where you just were, why is that?"

"Something awful has happened", she answered.

To which the prime minister answered: "This was a awful tragedy that took place, people have lost their lives and others have lost everything, all their possessions, their home and everything, what we are doing is putting in place the support that will help them".

Mr Green said the Government expected to appoint a chairman to lead the public inquiry "in days rather than weeks".

Dozens of protesters stormed the town hall on Friday shouting "we want justice" and "not 17" - referring to the previously announced official number of dead, which has now risen to 30.

"So the people could have some realistic understanding of what was going on".

Organisers appealed for calm as hundreds of people - some of them holding posters of the missing - surrounded the building demanding answers from the council over the deaths.

May has announced a £5m fund to meet the immediate needs of the victims, spanning clothes and food, as well as prioritising rehoming them.

Leader of the House of Commons Andrea Leadsom was also taken to task while walking through the West London estate.

Believing that Theresa was wrong to not speak to those who had been left with nothing following the devastating tragedy, Linda shared: "It's wonderful that she went down to meet the fire fighters and the councillors and everything but she was so near to where the victims are. We wait to see what action will come from it".

While denying the row represented a threat to Mrs May's leadership, Mrs Leadsom admitted that the Prime Minister was "trying to get a grip" of the situation.

On Friday, the PM sought to make up for this, visiting Grenfell Tower residents in hospital, where 12 remain in a critical condition.
