Harman edges clear, Thomas dazzles in US Open blitz

Justin Thomas on Saturday became the fifth player to post a 63 in a U.S. Open, joining Miller, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Vijay Singh but Thomas is the only one to do it on a par-72 course. It's interesting to see where the USGA has gone with the U.S. Open, being a little more friendly than in years' past.

Relation to par: Miller, 8 under.

Thomas set the U.S. Open scoring record despite registering a pair of bogeys, offsetting them with nine birdies and his closing eagle.

It also put him squarely in the mix to capture his first major. "I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said.

"Those things are bonuses, you know?"

Thomas, however, is not alone in that pursuit.

And despite starting his second round with bogeys on his first two holes, the South African bounced back to record a superb 66 which he matched in the third round. The shot carried 284 yards from the tee and then trickled back to about four feet from the flag during Justin Thomas' historic third round.

Koepka, Fleetwood, first-round leader Rickie Fowler and Si Woo Kim all shot 68s to stay in contention. Fowler shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to remain in contention for his first major championship.

Westwood had bogeyed the third and fifth before a superb tee shot on the 239-yard sixth - which played as the most hard hole on Thursday - set up a birdie from 18 feet. The top 18 players on the leaderboard going into the weekend have combined for zero majors.

She would finish the third round at -5 for the day, -11 for the tournament going into tomorrow's final round. It could change in a heartbeat.

Fleetwood, who shot 68, overtook Thomas for the lead with a birdie at 15 and missed an opportunity to get to 13 under when his birdie putt on the par-3 16th hole rolled over the left lip of the cup.

He dropped another shot at the fourth, and despite showing his battling qualities with a birdie at the eight, another bogey at ten kept him down among the also-rans. He says he feels comfortable on the course, and now that he spent Saturday booking his place in history, he wants to follow a similar fate on Sunday. "I've felt like my game has been good enough to compete in the majors this year", he said. "But you can't do anything about that stuff. But I'm looking forward to getting the job done".

Thomas' 3-wood from 299 yards banked into the front of the green and trickled purposely towards the pin on the 18th hole at the U.S. Open.

Thomas is now second to Brian Harman, who carded his second 67 of the tournament to sit at 12-under-par and one shot ahead of Thomas. But with a change in weather possibly coming, everyone that now sits in championship contention understands that anything can happen come Sunday.

"It just depends on the weather". "Someone could get out there early and shoot a low score".
