Here's What an Amazon Exec Says About Apple's HomePod

Speaking to USA Today in an interview published on Wednesday, Amazon senior vice president of devices David Limp seemed unmoved by Apple's new smart home speaker HomePod.

Apple just confirmed the release of their own home speaker, now called the HomePod, at its Worldwide Developers Conference 2017 on Monday.

Both Apple and Google have technological expertise which can allow their intelligent home speakers to compete strongly with Amazon. Amazon, the pioneer in the smart speaker industry, launched its smart speaker, Echo, in 2014 Apple HomePod will play news for you, book appointments, control climate of your rooms, do quick Google searches for you and many other tasks which any good, smart virtual assistant should do.

Apple also used its annual developer meeting - its largest ever with some 5,000-people attending - to announce the next version of its mobile operating system - iOS 11 - which will include a new setting for people who use their iPhone in the vehicle.

Apple wants the HomePod to be hard to classify. However, it is not without competition, there is also Amazon Echo and Google Home which we have written about here.

Another disadvantage it has is that music support only comes from Apple Music.

The speaker will be operated on Siri, Apple's voice technology. Meanwhile, an A8 chip runs Siri and the HomePod. For the record, the others support Spotify, Pandora, and other popular music streams. It is safe to say that HomePod is a modified and upgraded version of the iPod, which was mostly marketed to cater to the demand for portable music devices. Apple HomePod offers less flexibility, thanks to the closed ecosystem approach of Apple.

What's the verdict then? With its seven tweeters and one woofer, the Apple HomePod should theoretically sound better and so justify its price tag. However, experts believe that Google, which was a late entrant in the market, may be able to cut into Amazon's lead due to its strong artificial intelligence platform.

Shipping of the HomePod will begin in December, to the United States, Britain and Australia.

The downside however is Google and Amazon could also make much further advances in this time with products already on the market.
