Another police officer was injured. He has undergone several surgeries and received multiple blood transfusions.

Representative Steve Scalise, the House majority whip, was gravely wounded in the shooting last week. The other victims also are recovering from their wounds.

Hodgkinson acted alone and had no ties to terrorism, Slater said at the news conference.

"At this point in the investigation, it appears more spontaneous", Slater said.

It wasn't even clear whether he had prior plans to attack the baseball practice or whether he just happened upon it the morning of June 14, said Tim Slater, who leads the criminal division of the FBI's Washington field office.

Authorities revealed Wednesday that Hodgkinson had legally purchased a 7.62 mm caliber SKS rifle in March 2003 and a 9mm handgun after the election in November 2016. The police shot Hodgkinson at the scene, and he later died of his injuries.

"He was known to have an anger management problem", Slater said at a news conference, adding later that Hodgkinson was on medication and "struggling" with a number of issues including a hard personal life.

Investigators also found indications that Hodgkinson meant to go home to Belleville, Illinois on his computer. A government official says the suspect in the Virginia shooting that injured Rep. Steve Scalise and several others has been identified Hodgkinson.

Hodgkinson, who had came to Virginia from Belleville, Illinois, and was living out of his van, had rented a storage locker in Virginia that he visited more than three dozen times between April and June. Another laptop, a cell phone and a digital camera were found in Hodgkinson's vehicle following the shooting. "[He] made numerous posts on his social media accounts espousing anti-Republican views, however, those posts appear to be First Amendment-protected rights".

The man who fired on GOP lawmakers at baseball practice had a list of six congressmen on him, and kept the modified rifle he used in a storage unit he often visited, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

On April 15, Hodgkinson participated in a tax reform protest. In addition, Hodgkinson visited the office of Sen.

Still, Slater said that there is no evidence that the gunman had advance knowledge that the lawmakers would be practicing there or that he was specifically targeting any of those involved in the practice. His computer also showed Google searches the night before the shooting of a map from Alexandria to his Belleville home and of the term "2017 Republican Convention". The FBI did not say what the response from the family member was.
