House Budget Republicans agree to boost military funding

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans are getting ready for votes on legislation scuttling former President Barack Obama's health care law.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said it is unlikely he will be prepared to vote on a GOP healthcare plan next week.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he hasn't seen a draft of Senate Republicans' health care bill, but joked that the Russians have probably seen it by now.

"This 2,074-page, $2.5 trillion Democrat health care bill drafted without public input in the privacy of Majority Leader Harry Reid's office is not reform", Murkowski said in a statement issued immediately following the Senate vote.

Democrats are close to defeating Trumpcare, and the fact that the White House is taking steps to distance the President from this potential stinkbomb is the reason why Democrats need to turn up the heat and kill this bill.

Committee Chairman Diane Black hopes to hold a vote on the GOP measure soon, but it may run into resistance from conservatives seeking tougher restraint on spending and defense hawks demanding even more for the military.

The budget office concluded that the House-approved version of the bill would cost 23 million Americans health coverage by 2026.

Trump reportedly tells GOP senators that the House healthcare bill is 'mean'
CNN reporter Jim Acosta later tweeted that Trump also called the bill a "son of a bitch", according to a source. Murray noted the sharp contrast with 2010, when a Democratic-run Congress passed the Affordable Care Act .

The healthcare bill will be released to the Republican Senate Conference on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. EDT (1330 GMT) and posted online, Senators John Barrasso of Wyoming and Bob Corker of Tennessee told reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday.

"I don't think it gives enough time to thoroughly analyze the bill, but we'll see when it comes out", said Sen. Republican senators from states that have been hit hard by the opioid drug crisis have tried to cushion the Medicaid blow with a separate funding stream of $45 billion over 10 years for substance abuse treatment and prevention costs, now covered by the expansion of Medicaid under the ACA. All Democrats seem certain to oppose the bill. Democrats have also criticized the behind-the-scenes meetings, staging a protest on the Senate floor on Monday. They fear McConnell will jam the legislation through the Senate with little debate, limiting their chance to scrutinize the bill and whip up opposition against it.

They said unresolved questions included how to make sure the subsidies can't be used for policies that provide abortions and how fast they can repeal tax boosts Obama levied on high earners and medical companies to finance his statute's expanded coverage.

That could include the number of years the bill would take to phase out the extra money Obama provided to expand the federal-state Medicaid program for the poor and disabled to millions of additional low earners. She wants Alaska to retain its Medicare expansion under Obamacare, and supports federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

Bill Cassidy has been critical of the House bill and has called on Trump to fulfill his campaign promises of covering those with pre-existing conditions, eliminating mandates and lowering premiums.

That provision, a nod to conservative lawmakers led by Sen.
