India, China hold talks for strengthening strategic partnership, mutual dialogue

BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting

The BRICS foreign ministers' meeting is a precursor to the chain of meetings of BRICS officials including the National Security Advisors (NSAs) meeting to be held later next month ahead of the Summit.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, second left, and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, right, shake hands near Brazil's Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes, center, South Africa's Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, second right, and Indian External Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Singh before the opening of the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Beijing Monday, June 19, 2017. The BRICS joint working group on counter-terrorism concluded its meeting in May 2017.

He called the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit at Astana as "fruitful and constructive". "In their meeting past year, they reached significant understanding to enhance BRICS cooperation in security and counter-terrorism".

In the bilateral meeting with South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Wang said the BRICS countries, faced with increasing uncertainties in the global situation, should unite more closely and play a leading role in building a community of shared future for the mankind.

"India attaches great importance to BRICS", said Singh.

India might raise the issue of China blocking the ban on Pakistani militant Masood Azhar at the UN.

At last year's BRICS summit in India, China was non-committal on including the names of terror groups like JeM and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the BRICS' Goa Declaration.

This is the first major visit from India after Delhi became the only major country to boycott President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road summit on May 14. "But she was looking forward to meeting you".

The minister also spoke on India's efforts to promote BRICS as a brand among member states.

The Russian top diplomat was confident that the Ninth BRICS summit scheduled to be held in the Chinese city of Xiamen in September, would help the member states to boost their cooperation in overcoming global challenges.
