Iran launches missiles into eastern Syria

Hassan Rouhani

UNICEF said in a statement Tuesday that the donation on World Refugee Day will help it along with host countries to provide hundreds of thousands of children and young people with access to education, vocational training and psychological support.

Fighting and bombardment meanwhile resumed early Tuesday between Syrian government forces and rebels in the southern city of Daraa and nearby areas, where a 48-hour truce had gone into effect on Saturday.

The activist-run Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that government troops captured a hill west of the city and a former army base that was held by rebels. Daraa-based Ahmad al-Masalmeh confirmed the truce was extended Monday but did not know for how long. He is blaming the government for the truce's collapse.

Russian Federation has been a staunch supporter of Syria's beleaguered President Bashar Assad and has been providing an air cover for this offensive since 2015. The conflict quickly descended into a civil war, which has since left at least 400,000 people dead.

Iran has fired 6 missiles into Eastern Syria national TV showed footages of missile attacks being launched from western Iran.

But the missiles sent a message to more than just the extremists in Iraq and Syria, Gen. Ramazan Sharif of the Guard told state television in a telephone interview. The IS group did not immediately acknowledge the strikes. It is still unclear what the missiles struck, and Iran has provided few details. Israeli security officials said Monday they were studying the missile strike to see what they could learn about its accuracy and capabilities.

The Guard said it launched the strikes on Sunday in retaliation for attacks in Tehran earlier this month that were claimed by the Islamic State group.

The launch, which hit Syria's eastern city of Deir el-Zour on Sunday night, appeared to be Iran's first missile attack overseas in over 15 years and its first in the Syrian conflict, in which it has provided crucial support to embattled President Bashar Assad.

The Russian defense ministry said in a statement on Monday that it was suspending the deal after the US military confirmed that it downed a Syrian Air Force fighter jet on Sunday after it dropped bombs near USA partner forces.

Australia has six fighter jets based in the United Arab Emirates that strike targets in Syria and Iraq.

Australia on Tuesday suspended its airstrikes against IS targets in Syria as a precaution, after Russian Federation announced it was suspending the hotline and warned the USA -led coalition not to fly over Syrian army positions west of the Euphrates River.

Russian Federation has threatened aircraft from the US -led coalition in Syrian-controlled airspace and suspended a hotline meant to avoid collisions in retaliation for the USA military shooting down a Syrian warplane. While Iran has other ballistic missiles it says can reach longer distances, Sunday's strike appears to be the furthest carried out overseas.
