Iranian security forces kill mastermind of Tehran attacks

At least 17 people were killed and 52 others injured in Tehran on Wednesday when gunmen mounted nearly simultaneous assaults on Iran's Parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini.

The authorities say Iranian security forces killed the mastermind of the attacks on Saturday and that more than 50 suspects have been arrested around the country.

Separately, the head of the judiciary in Fars province said seven people were detained in the southern Larestan area for possible ties to Daesh, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on Saturday.

Baqeri made the remarks in a message to a ceremony held in Tehran on Sunday attended by a large number of high-ranking Iranian officials and people from all walks of life to commemorate the victims of this last Wednesday's terrorist incidents in Tehran.

The Tehran Security Council had convened an emergency meeting after two terror attacks occurred on the Iranian Parliament and Imam Khomeini Mausoleum respectively on Wednesday.

"Especially when we see the United States position and the Senate sanctions bill [the same day as the terrorist attacks on Tehran which killed 17 people], all their objectives are revealed", Larijani said, adding "the enemy's strategy is to damage Iran's dignity and busy our authorities with side issues".

"The mastermind who controlled the team. who had fled outside the country. paid the price for his crimes, with the cooperation of intelligence services of allied countries", Alavi told state television, without providing further details.

Iran's intelligence ministry said on Thursday that five of the gunmen and bombers were Iranian members of Islamic State who had fought in the militants' strongholds in Syria and Iraq.

In the entire year to March 2017 "we dismantled 45 cells, while in the past two-and-a-half months alone we have dismantled more than 25 terrorist cells", he said.

Iranian lawmakers said the intelligence minister had assured them that "all Islamic state elements have been eliminated" in the country.
