Jared Kushner speaks in public. And Washington takes notice

In May, Trump created an American Technology Council, his latest effort since taking office to modernize the US government.

President Donald Trump's newly-formed American Technology Council will meet Monday for the first time.

The meeting with almost 20 chief executives comes as the White House pushes to shrink government, cut federal employees and eliminate regulations.

Trump son in law/White House Senior Advisor Jared Kushner finally spoke in public, and the nation quickly got to see why he has stayed quiet for so long. According to reports, Bezos discussed how his company's commercial products could improve government IT, while Palantir Technologies Inc.

Trump's efforts to reach out to Silicon Valley follow the example of former President Barack Obama, who met regularly with technology executives and launched the U.S. Digital Service in an effort to recruit private-sector talent and modernize government.

Tech leaders are shown seated around the table with Donald Trump and Mike Pence at a meeting in December.

The White House thinks it can learn from credit card companies about significantly reducing fraud.

Numerous tech executives are eager to get White House help in dealing with regulatory and other policy issues such as visas for highly skilled workers.

Others attending include Alphabet Inc Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Chairman John Doerr and the CEOs of Microsoft Corp International Business Machines Corp, Intel Corp, Qualcomm Inc, Oracle Corp and Adobe Systems Inc, a White House official said on Sunday.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, outgoing General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt and Apple's Cook all condemned the move. Intel unveiled plans at the Oval Office in February to invest more than $7 billion in an Arizona factory, a move Trump portrayed as a win for USA workers. In 2015, the USA government made at least 7,000 separate IT investments and some agencies were using systems that had components at least 50 years old.

But much of the goodwill the industry may have been willing to extend the president at the beginning of his term in office has likely already been used up, as the White House has clashed with tech companies on a variety of issues, including immigration, encryption, and climate change.

For his part, Cook has said he plans to use the meeting as an opportunity to push back against the president's stance on the so-called Muslim immigration ban and to lobby for stronger data encryption.

After Trump announced he would exit the Paris Agreement, Musk tweeted that he would be resigning from his positions on the president's advisory councils.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the administration was focusing on technology this week.
