Jutanugarn beats Thompson, Chun in playoff at LPGA Classic

Ariya Jutanugarn ascends to world No. 1 in dramatic fashion.

The 21-year-old from Thailand is a virtual lock to move up one position Monday and knock Lydia Ko off her perch as the world's top-ranked women's player.

Ariya Jutanugarn guaranteed her ascent to world number one on Sunday, holing out from 25 feet on the first playoff hole to win the Manulife LPGA Classic.

Thompson completed her round with a birdie on the last but said consistency had been the key to another solid display. "Feel like I break through".

Wouldn't it have been grand, with the 150th birthday of our grand ol' country just around the corner, if a homegrown player could have won the Manulife LPGA Classic for the very first time in its six-year history?

While it was nearly certain the victory gave Ariya the points to be No.1 in the world rankings of women's golf, no one would predict it after last week's monumental error by the LPGA's "statistics team" that gave her the title, then snatched it back.

Besides overtaking Ko on the Rolex Rankings, Jutanugarn also jumped So Yeon Ryu from No. 2 to No. 1 in the Race to the CME Globe points list.

She said she had struggled with her putting down the stretch. "To be honest, I didn't pay attention to the ranking".

Thompson, who started the day with a one-shot lead, led by four shots at the turn but stumbled on the back nine with four bogeys.

"I just can't believe I win the tournament", said Jutanugarn, who covered her mouth in disbelief as she shed tears of joy. I didn't expect anything at all, because like when I got here I didn't feel comfortable with my swing. My tee shot not that good. "I know in the middle of the round I kind of got it going a little bit, which was nice". It was an unexpected finish with Thompson appearing to be in command going to the back nine.

Three more bogeys consigned her to a share of 28 places at seven under.

Jutanugarn had earlier shot a three-under-par round of 69, while Chun forced her way into the playoff with a 70. She was 14 under, just three strokes back of Thompson when the day began. "You know, I seemed to make everything all week, and then just two last two holes - actually the last three holes - I had like a five-footer, six-footer and about a four-footer and missed them all".

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario (AP) - Ariya Jutanugarn was seated by the scorer's tent after finishing her final round Sunday, snapping selfies with In Gee Chun and thinking there was little chance they would return to the course for a playoff at the Manulife LPGA Classic. She has been on a roller coaster of late, as the results of her four previous tournaments were - missed cut, tie for 33rd, second place and missed cut.
