Kevin Durant finally gets a title as Warriors finish off Cavaliers

Not only is Durant now an NBA champion, but after churning out 35.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.4 assists on upwards of 55 percent shooting from the field against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, Durant also adds NBA Finals MVP hardware to his lofty collection.

Cavaliers' forward LeBron James had a game-high 41 points and guard Kyrie Irving hit tough shots all night but defensive breakdowns by Cleveland led to easy baskets late in the game for the Warriors, igniting a deafening crowd.

With the core of Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green all expected to return for at least the next couple of years, the Warriors could be just in the beginning of a dynasty.

Durant's stellar play all season and throughout the playoffs vindicated Golden State's massive payout to the superstar in a controversial off-season deal.

KD was relentless on both sides of the court, playing a menacing defence and igniting the league's best offence.

Wrapping up the series in five games meant the Warriors came through the post-season with a 16-1 record, with only the defeat in game four keeping them from perfection.

For James, a three-time National Basketball Association champion, the defeat saw him earn the dubious distinction of being just the fourth player in National Basketball Association history to be on the losing team in a finals series five times. But instead of celebrating Golden State's greatness, former players are poking holes in the Warriors' historic achievements. And no matter what spin the league uses, it's not good. "To play with these guys is wonderful".

"Not one time did I feel like we were overmatched until probably like I looked up, there was like a minute and 20 (seconds), and we were down 13, I believe, or something at that point", James said, "and I was like, OK, we left everything on the floor, and it still wasn't enough".

Golden State went 67-15 this season in locking up the top seed in the Western Conference. "You can talk about whatever happens on the outside, but inside those lines, I come to bring it every day", Durant said. "I'm just so happy to be a part of it". He became the first player to average a triple-double in the Finals with 33.6 points, 12.0 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game in the series.

In a most attractive and poetic finish, the Warriors, who came into Monday night's game leading the Finals series 3-1, pulled off a flawless victory and won the game with a 9 point lead, leaving no doubt that they are the champions.

"The best player in the world is Michael Jordan". Then it was Golden State's turn again, taking the title in five games.

"I'm talking too much at this point", Durant said.

His five games in a row with 30 points is the first in a finals since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000.

It was the second time he and Durant had met in a finals series, following 2012 when James and the Miami Heat beat Durant's Oklahoma City Thunder 4-1.
