Koepka caps a record week with US Open title

It capped quite a journey for the 27-year-old Floridian.

Brooks Koepka is no longer flying under the radar after surviving a packed leaderboard Sunday at Erin Hills to win the U.S. Open at 16 under.

Matsuyama birdied No. 18 to close within one shot of Koepka with five holes to play, but Koepka turned on the afterburners late Sunday. Koepla pulled away to a four-stroke lead after a birdie on the 16th hole.

Emotion? The most he displayed was a light fist pump, his hand clenched a little tighter with each birdie, and a double fist pump on the 18th when he tapped in for par.

"I just hit a three-wood a touch left on 11, and I had to try and hit something out of the rough, and ended up in a tough spot behind the green", Fowler said.

JUST MISSED: A great fight from Harman, the 54-hole leader by one over Koepka, Fleetwood and Justin Thomas, on Sunday, but Koepka was just too good.

The wind did not blow for three rounds, and though it was up on Sunday morning, it was less of a factor in the afternoon, and Brooks Koepka finished 16-under par and won by four.

Matsuyama got off to a fast start with three birdies in his first five holes, including a 41-foot putt from just off the green on No. 4.

Fleetwood, ranked 33rd in the world, steadied his round with a birdie on the ninth and returned to 11 under by picking up another shot on the par-five 14th and then parred his final four holes.

South Korea's Kim Si Woo was one behind Fowler on nine under after also shooting a 68, while three players - Patrick Reed (65), Russell Henley (67) and Charley Hoffman (68) - were on eight under.

But he had to settle for a tie for second with Harman, four strokes back of the champion.

"I played really well", said Matsuyama, 25, who put himself in a hole with an opening-round 74. "You never know how you're going to react being up there in the final round - you've got to deal with that and it's all new for me". When he last won a major, in June of 2015, golf's biggest events seemed the domain of only a few players.

"I'm proud of the way I hung in there today".

"When he started I couldn't hit it and I was missing cuts for fun". "I played two good rounds, but it wasn't enough". "For me, if I can just stay where I am, just keep doing what I'm doing, I'll have a chance". With birdie or even eagle as a possibility to get to 17-under and pass Rory's mark, Koepka nuked one 379 yards. The pin sheet originally given out in the first tee had the wrong hole location for the 13th hole.

"I needed something to go in and see that to build momentum off it, and just carried that over", Koepka said.

Xander Schauffele rounded off a stunning breakthrough week with a 69 that earned a share of fifth place with Bill Haas (69) and Rickie Fowler (72), who again flattered to deceive on the final day of a major.

"I don't know if I have 14 under in my bag to play, " said Stricker, 50, who finished with a 69 and in a tie for 16th. "I got in a hazard on one".

Lowry also hit a 73 the day before, a one-shot improvement on Friday's round, with the 30-year-old's best round (71) coming on the first day.

The statistics show that he won with a combination of power and accuracy from tee to green on the 7,845-yard course, the longest in major championship history.
