Koepka tames wind, nerves to win US Open by four shots

Brooks Koepka kisses the winning trophy after the U.S. Open golf tournament Sunday at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

Brooks Koepka, in a tie for second with Thomas and a shot behind surprise leader Brian Harman, made the ideal start with birdies on the first and second to move into the outright lead, only for Harman to respond on the third with a birdie putt that did a full circuit of the hole before dropping in.

Koepka, a close friend and training partner of world number one and 2016 US Open champion Dustin Johnson, had only won one title on the PGA Tour since turning professional in 2012.

Koepka, the Florida State alumnus. has faired well in recent majors, finishing tied for fourth in the 2016 PGA Championship, and a 10th place finish in the 2015 Open Championship. His best finish in 20 U.S. Open appearances came in the first Open to be held in Wisconsin.

Harman's chances ended with two straight bogeys, and a bogey on the par-5 18th hole gave him a 72 and a tie for second with Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, who closed with a 66.

Thomas, who had six birdies on his outward nine on way to nine-under 63 on Saturday, found plenty of trouble on Sunday going three-over through the first nine to drop six off the lead.

Memo to anyone who aspires to win next year's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills: Better hope that Scheffler earns a spot in the field and, if he does, play a practice round with him.

The world No. 50 headed to the clubhouse on 12 under, one ahead of Thomas, Brooks Koepka and England's Tommy Fleetwood.

Trump 'considering firing special counsel'
Ms sanders also said says the president was pleased with attorney general Jeff Sessions' evidence to Congress on Tuesday.

"Yeah, I don't get those very often". Jason Day set the record of 19 years, 7 months, 26 days in the 2007 Legend Financial Group Classic. Thomas' 9-under 63 also broke Johnny Miller's U.S. Open record for low round in relation to par. I´ve been there a handful of times and had some good finishes.

At 13 under par the American pair enjoyed a two-shot lead over Fleetwood, who had holed from eight feet for birdie on the second before three-putting the next.

The flag commemorated the late Arnold Palmer's win at the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills.

"Anytime you've seen U.S. Open venues work back toward even par, there are complaints", he said.

"I learned a lot this week", he said. Fowler started one shot out of the lead at the Masters this year and shot 76. Palmer shot a 65 after going into the final round trailing by seven shots.

But when he stood on the 18th green at Erin Hills, shaking hands with the USGA's governing class, the winner's solid-gold Jack Nicklaus medal draped around his neck, he looked like the picture of contentment, and why wouldn't he? "The conditions were so tough", Harman said. Spieth made birdies on the first two holes, both of which are playing downwind.

Of the 24 players on the course early, only two are under par for the day — William McGirt and Jordan Spieth. I was happy it stayed benign for us, and I capitalized on it.

Asked to expand on the conversation he had with Johnson, Koepka laughed and said, "Yeah, I mean there's probably not that much that's that interesting to be honest".
