Kvitova wins Aegon Classic final for 1st title since attack

WTA Birmingham Petra Kvitova sets up an all Czech semifinal with Lucie Safarova

On a good day for former Wimbledon champions - Roger Federer thrashed Alexander Zverev to take the Halle Open for the ninth time - Kvitova displayed the same mental toughness which has helped her physical recovery.

It was also about a missed opportunity, which might have cost her the second set. "So I have to say I'm kind of proud of myself that I did it today". Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova in action against Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova during their semifinal match at the Birmingham Classic tennis tournament at Edgbaston Priory, Birmingham, England.

"It was such an awesome fight between the both of us and I am so happy that I won", Safarova said.

The left-handed Czech player beat Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 7-6 (5) on grass at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament.

This time she saved three in by far the best match of the tournament so far.

Vandeweghe, who is such a threat on grass, admitted that her injury was "a concern for Wimbledon" which starts a week on Monday.

The tournament's other Grand Slam victor, former French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, plays unseeded Australian Ashleigh Barty in the second semifinal.

Building on her advantage, Kvitova followed up with a second break before serving out strongly with an ace to seal her remarkable comeback success and despite tasting defeat Barty was full of admiration for her opponent. She had been suffering from exhaustion as well as a thigh strain, having played two monster matches in her previous three wins.

Dems Fired Up To Fire Pelosi?
Pelosi , 77, has led the House Democratic caucus for almost 15 years, from the minority into the majority and back again. There were more conservatives and Republicans than Democrats, and undecideds only made up for a small number of voters.

She will go for her 20th career title in her 27th final.

Barty won her first career title in March in Kuala Lumpur, and became the first Australian finalist here in 25 years.

Kvitova seized control of the decider as she broke immediately then pressured the Barty serve again only for the momentum to swing again as the Australian broke back to level at 2-2.

"It has been a hard time and I wasn't sure if I would play again".

"She's always been a great champion but I think we appreciate that more now that she's back playing week in and week out".

Kvitova has made her first final in only her second tournament since returning after a six-month absence.

Barty was ebullient. "I executed exactly the way I wanted to", she said.
