Labour missed 'open goal' against Theresa May, says MP

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn casting his vote at a polling station at Pakeman Primary School in London, England, June 8, 2017.

The two top aides to British Prime Minister Theresa May resigned Saturday, shouldering some of the blame for an election that proved a disaster for the Conservative Party, a headache for Britain's exit from the European Union - and potentially a fatal blow to May's premiership.

May said that "I want to reflect on the election and why it did not deliver the result I hoped for". Beleaguered May is appointing new members of her government after several of them lost their seats in Parliament in this week's general election that proved disastrous for her Conservative Party.

The Labour leader vowed to fight his Tory rival's attempt to run a minority government in an interview with the Sunday Mirror. The opposition Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, has 261 seats, the Scottish National Party has 35, and the Liberal Democrats 12.

Mr Leslie said Labour MPs were "working in this together" but he would not commit to serving in a shadow cabinet.

"She's staying, for now", the source said.

Founded on the evangelical principles of the late Ian Paisley's Free Presbyterian church, Northern Ireland's largest political party has been repeatedly at odds with the region's LGBT community.

At the start of the election campaign, opinion polls predicted May would win easily against Corbyn.

Joining forces with the hardline Protestant party also threatens London's neutrality in Northern Ireland, which is key to the delicate balance of power in a province once plagued by violence.

May had called a snap election in the unshakeable belief it would strengthen her Conservative Party's numbers in the House of Commons and allow her a smooth follow-through in the execution of Brexit, UK's exit from the European Union.

The election's biggest victor was Corbyn, who confounded expectations that his left-wing views made him electorally toxic.

"We put forward our policies - strong and hopeful policies - and they've gained an incredible response and traction", he said.

George Osborne, the former finance minister who stepped down at the election, told ITV that the results were "catastrophic" for his party.

Owen Paterson, a senior Conservative lawmaker, said "let's see how it pans out", when asked about May's future. He said it was impossible to predict whether she would still be prime minister at the end of the year.

Johnson denied the reports as "tripe" and said: "I am backing Theresa May". To be the ruling party, May's party needed to get at least 326 seats. Instead, she has left Britain's government ranks in disarray, days before the divorce negotiations are due to start on June 19.

The Telegraph said senior Conservatives including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, interior minister Amber Rudd and Brexit minister David Davis were taking soundings over whether to replace her.

The 1998 Good Friday agreement set up power sharing in Northern Ireland, largely ending years of sectarian violence.
