Lawyer says Trump isn't under investigation

One of Donald Trump's lawyers insisted Sunday that the president was not under criminal investigation as part of the sweeping probe into Russia's alleged meddling in American elections, despite the U.S. leader's tweets angrily calling the whole saga a "distraction".

Trump sent his own lawyer Jay Sekulow to Fox News Sunday with the message that the President isn't under criminal investigation, but the lawyer lost it and ended up admitting twice that Trump is under investigation.

Sen. Marco Rubio says it's best for the country to let the FBI's investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 presidential election take its course, and the Florida Republican tells CNN's "State of the Union" that's what he'd advise President Donald Trump.

Trump advisers and confidants describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets in the White House carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy to discredit — and potentially end — his presidency.

"The tweet from the president was in response to the five anonymous sources that were purportedly leaking information to the Washington Post about a potential investigation of the president", Sekulow told Chuck Todd.

"There was a lot of issues this past week", Sekulow said, citing the president's major address regarding Cuba and the shooting incident that injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and four others.

Schiff also said he believes recent congressional testimony from Comey and Attorney General Jeff Sessions points to signs of possible obstruction by Trump that warrant further investigation. "I'm just curious, why doesn't the president embrace this investigation if he's innocent?" First of all, you've now stated that he is being investigated. He said he had only been discussing the constitutional problem posed if the president were being investigated.

Sekulow: No, Chris... let me crystal clear so you completely understand.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who argued earlier this week a president can not be guilty of obstruction of justice even though Gingrich voted in favor of an obstruction count against former President Bill Clinton and the fact that former President Richard Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment for obstruction, said on ABC's "This Week" that though he has "no problem with Bob Mueller as a person ..."

Wallace: You just said that he's being investigated.

"He's not afraid of the investigation", responded Sekulow, who quickly caught himself. "That is not how the rule of law works, and Congress will not allow the president to so egregiously overstep his authority".

Alternatively, Rubio said the bill should not go to a vote without the opportunity for debate and input.

Sekulow, "No, he's not being investigated". "So this was his response, via Twitter, via social media". On Sunday, however, a lawyer from Trump's growing personal legal team indicated that his client, the president of the United States, essentially didn't know what he was tweeting about, or something. "I don't think that tweet helped him", Gingrich said.
