Leo Varadkar formally elected as prime minister of Ireland

Leo Varadkar is set to officially become the Republic of Ireland's Taoiseach (prime minister) on Wednesday.

Parliament voted 57 to 50 with 45 abstentions to confirm the 38-year-old leader and former health, tourism, and social protection minister.

Paying tribute to his predecessor, Enda Kenny, who resigned on Tuesday, Mr Varadkar said: "I have no doubt, only for him, this country as we know it would not be here today".

"The government I lead will not be one of left or right".

And speaking to the Irish Sun today, Feighan told how Ireland's new leader spoke about what will be the core of his government, albeit in a brief speech.

Now, Ireland has its first youngest and openly gay prime minister.

Leo Varadkar took office Wednesday as Ireland's prime minister, also known as the taoiseach. Leo Varadkar is the son of an Irish nurse and Indian doctor.

CNN sues Justice Department for copies of Comey memo
While a sitting president is unlikely to face criminal prosecution, obstruction of justice could form the basis for impeachment. Rosenstein also approved the appointment of Mueller as special counsel after the recusal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

In a move created to heal any divisions in his own party, Varadkar on Tuesday appointed the man he defeated, Simon Coveney, as deputy leader of Fine Gael.

His first official act was to propose suspension of the Dail for four hours while he travelled to Aras an Uachtarain to be officially appointed to the office by President Michael D Higgins. "I think that is too restrictive", he said. But Varadkar's election is part of a broader transformative shift that has taken place in Ireland in recent decades - Ireland actually legalized same-sex marriage in 2015, the first country to do so by popular vote.

His family originates from Varad in Maharashta's Sindhudurg district, and Leo Varadkar kept his Indian connect alive, completing an internship at the King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. Someone who is unconditionally on my side, which is always great.

Varadkar, who graduated from Trinity with a medicine degree in 2003, has often returned to the university where he joined Trinity Young Fine Gael, a society which he chaired during his time as a student, including appearances at Trinity Ball to supporting Med Day.

"This has never been about me ... it has always been about the problems and challenges that the people of our country face", he said.
