London attack: Saudi Arabia players fail to join minute's silence with Australia

Saudi Arabia declined to participate in a minute's silence to honour the victims of last weekend's London attack before their 2018 World Cup qualifier in Adelaide on Thursday, their opponents Australia said.

Saudi Arabia met Australia for a World Cup qualifier at the Adelaide Oval stadium in South Australia.

Australia defeated Saudi Arabia, 3-2.

The minute's silence was approved by the Asian Football Confederation before the game but while Saudi Arabia's national team agreed to the tribute the players were not obliged to pay their respects, according to officials.

The Football Federation further said that it condemned all acts of terrorism and extremism and offered condolences to the families of all the victims.

The team sparked global outrage after failing to observe a minute's silence before a World Cup qualifier against Australia.

"That was a disgraceful lack of respect, not just for the two Australians killed, one of whom was a young South Australian, all of those victims of that terror attack in London", Mr Albanese said on Channel Nine's Today Show.

The Socceroos, who have qualified for the last three editions, trail the Saudis and group leaders Japan by three points with three games left in Asia's Group B.

The FFA confirmed the two teams had agreed to observe the moment of silence but noted the Saudi Arabian players would observe and respect the moment of silence in a different fashion than is customary for situations like this due to Saudi culture.

The Australians could hardly string a pass together but somehow regained the lead with Juric's second goal off a flicked header from James Leckie's cross from the by-line.

The top two teams win a place at the World Cup finals in Russian Federation next year.

Australia won the match 3-2 in their penultimate game before taking part in the Federation Internationale de Football Association 2017 Confederations Cup tournament in Russia.

It's a huge week for Australian soccer, with Argentina and Brazil to meet in a friendly at the MCG on Friday before the Socceroos face Brazil next Tuesday in their final hit-out before the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation later this month.
