London crash: What we know so far

In a statement, he said: "Over the past weeks and months, Muslims have endured many incidents of Islamophobia, and this is the most violent manifestation to date".

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said extra police had been deployed to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan, describing the attack as "an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

Prime Minister Theresa May described the attack as a "terrible incident" but said it is a "potential terrorist attack" and that she would "chair an emergency meeting" later Monday morning.

Another eyewitness, who lives in a flat on the Seven Sisters Road, said the van seemed to have hit people who were coming out of the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers finished, the BBC reported.

The vehicle hit people as they were leaving the Finsbury Park Mosque, one of the biggest in the country, the Muslim Council of Britain said.

They killed eight people before being shot dead by police.

Police said the 48-year-old man who was driving the auto has been arrested and taken to a hospital as a precaution.

"People feel unsafe because after the terrorist attacks of London, Manchester, the increase of Islamophobia and hate crimes", he added. Ramadan is a time when Muslims are more visible and when there are larger congregations who attend late at night to pray after opening their fasts.

"An attack on one religion is an attack on all religions and all people and faiths must stand together against terror", he stated.

A leader of the Muslim Council of Britain has called for extra security at mosques after a van struck worshippers leaving prayers at the Finsbury Park mosque. The site of the incident is close to another mosque near the Finsbury Park on the same road.

He mentioned that the Jewish community has spent the past weekend together with Muslims and others participating in the Great Get Together in memory of Jo Cox - a British Labour Party politician who was murdered previous year by an alleged white supremacist.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who lives nearby, said: "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight".

London is on edge after eight people were killed in a van and knife attack on London Bridge and the Borough Market area earlier this month. "Everybody was shouting: "A van's hit people, a van's hit people", she said. Police killed three Muslim extremists who carried out the attack.

Dozens of police, fire and ambulance service vehicles have been sent to the area, armed officers are on the scene and a helicopter is overhead.

Police say a suspect was arrested immediately after the attack, which is being treated as a terrorist incident. Eight others were taken to three area hospitals and two were treated at the scene.

An imam today protected from an angry mob the attacker who ploughed his van into worshippers outside a mosque in London, killing one person and injuring ten others. It said its prayers are with the victims.

The crash occurred near the Finsbury Park mosque.

Depraved terrorist Khalid Masood also used his vehicle to run down people on Westminster Bridge before stabbing a police officer to death. He was bleeding. My friend said he had to lift the van, I was busy with a man who tried to escape. The 48-year-old driver was arrested and taken to hospital.

London Ambulance Service Deputy Director of Operations, Kevin Bate said: "We were called at 12.15am to reports of a road traffic collision at Seven Sisters Road".

Further details were not immediately available.
