London fire: Grenfell Tower debris fear shuts Tube lines

A large police presence held back angry crowds outside a Kensington church where Theresa May was meeting victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

One woman wept saying it was because the Prime Minister declined to speak to anyone outside the meeting which lasted less than hour.

Police broke up a scuffle between members of the crowd as the Mrs May's auto drove off.

Dozens of demonstrators surged towards the entrance of St Clement's church and there were scuffles outside as organisers appealed for calm.

Downing Street also announced a £5 million fund for emergency supplies, food and clothing.

Three days after fire ripped through the 24-storey block, killing at least 30 people, residents are desperate for answers - and for the bodies of their loved ones, many of which are still inside.

It tore through all floors of the building and took more than 200 firefighters and 24 hours to bring it under control.

"Kensington is a tale of two cities - it is among the wealthiest parts of this country but the ward where this took place is one of the poorest", he said.

"I spoke with people who ran from the fire in only the clothes they were wearing", she said in a statement.

Accounts of people trapped inside as the blaze destroyed everything around them, shouting for help, throwing children to safety and trying to escape through windows using makeshift ropes from bed sheets tied together left the nation in shock.

"The fact that they are not telling people is very frustrating".

"Everyone affected by this tragedy needs reassurance that the government is there for them", May added.

However rumours have been circulating that the official death toll is much higher amid accusations of a cover-up by the authorities.

Some footage from inside the tower may be released tomorrow to show the difficulties fire crews are facing, Cundy said at the press conference.

Police yesterday warned that some of the victims may never be identified because of the state of the remains.

The specialist bereavement support for families will be provided by the NHS, Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, said.

Outside, crowds applauded members of the London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service as they lined up to be thanked for their bravery by the royal visitors. "We will be doing that as swiftly as we can".

An investigation led by a senior detective from Scotland Yard's homicide and major crime command is under way with calls for "corporate manslaughter" arrests to be made. On Saturday, NHS England said 19 people were being treated in hospital, with 10 in critical condition.

The streets around the tower block in north Kensington are plastered with posters begging for information about those who were in the building.

He said: "We must have had the most horrendous night of dead lives".

He said a police investigation by specialist detectives would "establish the facts to provide, as best we possible, answers for those so deeply and tragically affected by the awful fire at Grenfell Tower".

Newly-appointed Indian-origin housing minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government, Alok Sharma, said, "Every single family will be rehoused in the local area".
