Mr Cundy today appealed for anyone who knew about people who were living or may have been living in the tower at the time of the fire to make contact with police.
Hundreds of people descended on community centres and churches following the disaster that left at least 58 people dead, donating food, clothes and nappies while others raised nearly £3m for the victims on websites such as JustGiving.
He said it had been "incredibly emotional working in there".
The London Mayor said the local community was "frustrated" and "angry" in the wake of the blaze, which left at least 58 people feared dead.
The move follows widespread criticism of the local Kensington and Chelsea Council's performance as residents of the 24-storey Grenfell Tower, which was engulfed in fire early on Wednesday, condemned the relief efforts and lack of information. But these numbers are not precise, and police expect them to change.
The deadly blaze at London's Grenfell Tower apartment block on June 14 was Britain's worst fire disaster in decades. "There is also a real possibility that there may be people in the building that no one knows are missing", he added.
The Commander went on to warn that some victims may never be identified "due to the intensity of the fire".
Cdr Cundy said his priority was to identify the people who died in the building and to remove them as quickly as possible.
Earlier the group, made up of survivors of the fire, evacuees from nearby buildings, volunteers and community leaders, criticised Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation for its reaction to the disaster.
In a statement to the Press Association, they said: "With the exception of very few junior officers, the estate managers have been invisible in the aftermath of the tragedy".
Numerous families that were affected lost more than one relative, said Cdr Cundy, adding that his "heart went out to them".
Speaking to journalists after attending a church service in the shadow of the burned out tower block this morning, Khan said the fire that is believed to have claimed at least 58 lives was a "preventable accident".
Prime Minister Theresa May, already facing severe political problems trying to form a government after losing her majority in Parliament, was heckled when she visited the site and criticized for taking too long to meet with survivors.
Mr Paget-Brown sidestepped questions over whether he felt guilty about the tragedy, telling BBC Radio 4's The World At One: "I feel awful about the whole position we find ourselves in".
UK Chancellor Philip Hammond today indicated that flammable material suspected to have been used was most likely banned in the UK. "The work to search the building is challenging, but naturally could never be done quickly enough for those now having to live with the uncertainty of knowing where their loved ones are".
Two British officials said Sunday that new exterior cladding used in a renovation of Grenfell Tower may have been banned under United Kingdom building regulations.
More than 200 firefighters and 40 fire trucks were involved in operations to douse the blaze, which last for several hours. The BBC understands the death toll could rise to about 70 people in total.
