London mayor at church near London fire tragedy

British authorities are launching a criminal investigation into the London apartment building fire - as the death toll from the blaze has almost doubled, to 30. He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead at the charred building.

"The figure of 58 are those who are missing and that we have to presume are dead", said Cundy.

"The figure will be higher", he said.

British health authorities say they are still treating 19 patients, 10 of whom remain in critical condition after the London high-rise fire.

Police have been struggling to come up with an authoritative list of who was in the building when the fire started, making it hard to determine how many had died.

Previously, the Metropolitan Police had confirmed 30 people had been killed in the inferno; the announcement Saturday almost doubles that number. He asked anyone who was in the tower and survived to contact police immediately.

Dr Tomlin said the residents had gone from living normal lives before the tragedy to bringing their frustrations to the very top of Government.

Mrs Kelly added in a statement: "There is nothing we can say that will blunt the feeling of loss and anger".

The news came as the Government announced those left homeless by the fire will be given at least £5,500 from an emergency fund.

The group said: "In our meeting at Downing Street, we explained to the Prime Minister the anger of all residents towards the management of the estate over a long period of time, paving the way to this tragedy".

Ms Nachmany said she has no idea if any of the offers have been sent on to displaced residents in north Kensington - but council officials insist "all residents of Grenfell Tower who have requested help have been placed in hotels".

The identification of the victims is proving very hard - which experts attribute to the extreme heat of the fire. Investigators say the burning panels may have acted like a chimney, making the fire more intense.

London Police have launched an investigation to determine whether any crimes contributed to the blaze.

Officials are using dental records, fingerprints and DNA samples to try and positively identify victims.

"When you have a fire that takes hold like that, that is literally an inferno".

The queen said it was "difficult to escape a very sombre mood" on what is normally a day of celebration.

There has been a public outcry at the government's initial failure to provide up-to-the minute information.

Experts believe the building's new exterior cladding, which contained insulation, helped spread the flames quickly up the outside of the public housing tower early Wednesday. Are there other buildings with that cladding?

Mr Khan said the local community was "frustrated" and "angry" in the wake of the blaze after he attended a church service near the tower block in west London. More than 3 million pounds ($3.8 million) have been raised for the victims. Numerous displaced are living in churches and community centers.

Protesters are demanding answers over the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Two nearby Underground lines were partially shut down Saturday in the fire area to make sure that debris did not land on the tracks.

The local Grenfell Action Group had claimed, before and during a major 10-million-pound refurbishment of Grenfell Tower previous year, that the block constituted a fire risk and residents had warned that access to the site for emergency vehicles was "severely restricted".

They feel they have been ignored because they are poor, he said.
