London mosque attacker: 'I want to kill all Muslims'

The crash occurred near the Finsbury Park mosque.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested and will undergo a mental health assessment.

One man died and 10 people were injured after a van drove into a crowd of Muslim worshippers near a mosque in London in the early hours of Monday.

"- On its Twitter account, the London's Metropolitan Police said "#SevenSisters Rd #Finsburypark incident - At this early stage there are no other suspects, however the investigation continues".

"I tried to stop him (the suspect), some people were hitting him but I said stop him and keep him until the police came".

Amateur video footage seen by AFP showed at least three people laying on the ground, including one who was receiving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

The van rammed into the worshipers on Seven Sisters Road, a busy thoroughfare in Finsbury Park, north London, near a Muslim community center and a mosque.

British Muslim leaders have linked the terrorist attack to islamophobia and urged United Kingdom prime minister, Theresa May, to do more to curb anti-Muslim rhetoric. May called the attack a "sickening attempt' to break bonds of citizenship that define the country, adding that hatred and evil of this kind will never succeed".

One witness described being surrounded by bodies in the wake of the attack outside the Muslim Welfare House, close to Finsbury Park Mosque. Police have not released his identity.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said police are investigating whether the death of the man getting first aid was a direct result of the attack, but it was too early to say for sure. London's Mayor Sadiq Mayor Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, urged the public to focus on shared values and the city to stand together in an unprecedented period in the capital's history.

Witnesses said a white van struck a crowd of Muslim worshippers who had been attending evening prayers during the holy month of Ramadan and were looking after a man who had collapsed.

"Extra policing resources have been deployed across London in order to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan".

In a statement, Kacimi added: "I would like to particularly thank our imam. whose bravery and courage helped calm the immediate situation after the incident and prevented further injuries and potential loss of life".

There has been an increase in hate crime reports since the Manchester Arena bombing and the London Bridge attack.

London police have declared the crash a major incident and closed the area to normal traffic. "We have a witness saying that the guy who did what he did, the driver of the van, said 'I did my bit, ' which means he's not mentally ill", Kacimi said. "This person was conscious". He was just coming out of prayers, a nice gentleman going home after prayers and he is hit and killed by a auto - what did he do? Why? Why?

But the attack also laid bare the frustrations of a community who believe they've been unfairly equated with extremists who have carried out atrocities in the name of Islam.

"Our community is in shock", he said, urging people attending prayers to remain vigilant, a warning that was echoed by police. Speaking outside her Downing Street office Monday, May said officers responded to the attack in one minute and declared it a terror attack within eight minutes.

"There has been an outpouring of sympathy for all for the recent terror attacks but hardly a whisper on this attack", he said.
