London police investigating incident of collision with pedestrians near mosque

An armed police officer mans a cordon on the Seven Sisters Road at Finsbury Park where a vehicle struck pedestrians in London Monday

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she will chair an emergency meeting Monday morning following a van crash which killed a man outside a mosque.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect".

The chairman of the mosque, Mohammed Kozbar, described the incident as a "cowardly attack" and said there were many injuries.

The van, driven by a 48-year old man, rammed into a crowd of people as they were leaving the mosque after nightly prayers.

The London Ambulance Service said: "We have sent a number of ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist responses teams to the scene".

Harun Khan, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said that based on accounts from witnesses the driver was "motivated by Islamophobia".

The neighborhood has two mosques, and several hundred worshippers would have been in the area after attending prayers as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Vanzella said she saw police put a man into a police auto and take him away, but she didn't see them arrest him.

"All the victims were from the Muslim community", counter-terrorism police co-ordinator Neil Basu told reporters, adding that the man who died was already receiving first aid before the incident.

One man was killed and eight people were seriously injured.

The incident comes just over two weeks after three Islamist militants drove into pedestrians on London Bridge and stabbed people at nearby restaurants and bars, killing eight. Everybody was shouting: "A vans hit people, a vans hit people".

Police, including armed officers, could be seen manning a wide cordon around the area.

"I've been in touch with the mosques, police. My thoughts are with those and the community affected by this terrible event".

Al-Masri, who was the mosque's imam from 1997 to 2003, was later extradited to the United States, where he was convicted of supporting al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists, and sentenced to life in prison in 2015.

Despite the change in leadership and a new focus on inter-faith relations, the mosque reported it had received a string of threatening emails and letters in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris. "He targeted Muslims this time", the witness, identified only as Rayan, said.

Britain has seen two other attacks this year.

"A number of passers-by, or friends, or people who had come by from the mosque, were gathering around him to help take him to his family, take him to his house", Versi told Reuters.

There was also an attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, where a bomber set off an explosion that killed more than 20 people.

Five people were killed in the attack.
