London van incident is 'potential terrorist attack': PM

An armed police officer guards a street in north London after a vehicle hits pedestrians near a mosque this morning

One suspect was arrested at the scene in Finsbury Park, north London, after being wrestled to the ground by members of the public, according to early witness reports. One person was killed and eight others were injured after a van rammed into a crowd of worshippers near Finsbury Park Mosque in Seven Sisters Road, police said today. They said there were a number of casualties and one person had been arrested.

"Horrible to watch police officers doing cardiac massage at people on the floor, desperately trying to save them. The situation is still unfolding and I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant", The Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

In 2013, many U.S. embassies across the Middle East closed their doors and kept staff at home on Laylat al-Qadr because of "security considerations".

The council's secretary general Harun Khan said he expected authorities to step up security "as a matter of urgency", adding many would feel "terrorised" following the incident outside the Muslim Welfare House in Seven Sisters Road.

Britain's terrorist alert level is now at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

Video posted online of the aftermath of the attack showed a scene of chaos as people tried to help the injured.

The Muslim Council tweeted that worshippers were struck by a van as they were leaving prayers near the Finsbury Park mosque.

"We do not know how many were injured or killed, but our prayers are with the victims and families". The incident took place after the worshippers were leaving the mosque just after the midnight in the local time.

A group of Muslim men were praying on the pavement nearby. "I just hope they did", witness Cynthia Vanzella wrote on Twitter. It is said that no radicalization happens here, but many have different belief as well. Muslims now are observing Ramadan, during which they fast from dawn to dusk and engage in intense prayer and feast at sundown.

Yet another tragic incident has rocked London on Sunday night. "It wouldn't be odd that you would have large numbers of people breaking their fasts and praying at this time".

The 32-year-old told the Press Association: "There were a lot of people in the street, crossing the street, going to mosque for prayers, for forgiveness, just to pray and go home and eat".

Al-Masri, who was the mosque's imam from 1997 to 2003, was later extradited to the United States, where he was convicted of supporting al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists, and sentenced to life in prison in 2015.

Finsbury Park is a diverse London suburb situated a few kilometres north of the city centre. Around 10% of the borough's population is Muslim.

Finsbury Park overground rail station and the busy Seven Sisters Road have been closed off. "Everybody was shouting: "A van's hit people, a van's hit people", she said.

"They were very nervous, shouting very loud, trying desperately to make some signs to a police auto that was. just passing the road", she told CNN.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the first Muslim to serve in that position, said extra police would be deployed.
